As a devoted fan of the witty and charming world of Frasier Crane, I can’t help but notice the hilarious culinary misadventures that seem to run in the Moon-Crane family like a gourmet gene gone awry! From Daphne’s disastrous foray into the restaurant business to Niles’ unfortunate ironing mishap, it seems they all share a peculiar talent for turning even the simplest of tasks into a kitchen catastrophe. And now, our beloved David Crane has joined this exclusive club with his ham-in-the-garbage-disposal escapade!
Contains spoilers for “Frasier” Season 2, Episode 1 — “Ham”
Call it the Massachusetts garbage disposal massacre. In the inaugural episode of the second season of the “Frasier” reboot, poor David Crane (Anders Keith) just wants to prove to his uncle that he’s mature enough to go to Cameroon to spend the summer tagging chimpanzees. His uncle pooh-poohs the notion. David becomes determined to show his responsibility off, and the perfect opportunity presents itself when the extremely expensive Jamón Ibérico Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) has ordered from Spain arrives. Unfortunately, his attempts to help summarily result in the ham being stuck legbone-down in a garbage disposal — not to mention the ruined cake and shattered pitcher of sangria. Luckily for David, however, Frasier and his friend Alan Cornwall (Nicholas Lyndhurst) are too upset about their fight over his cousin Freddy’s (Jack Cutmore-Scott) loyalties that they can’t stop bickering. Forgiveness ultimately arrives even for David, who pries the ham free of the garbage disposal and serves it up. It apparently tastes heavenly, in spite of everything it’s been through.
If David’s actions seem reminiscent, it might be because you recall a similar day for David (David Hyde Pierce)’s father, Niles, in “Three Valentines” from Season 6 of the original series. In that scene without dialogue, Niles accidentally causes injury, embarrassment, and small fires while ironing his pants. This incident highlights a resemblance between father and son, but it’s not just Niles who struggles with the oven; the clumsiness extends to other Crane family members too.
None of the Moon-Cranes are very good in the kitchen
Despite David’s father not being particularly skilled in the kitchen, it appears that the Moon-Crane family may have a persistent issue with culinary abilities. On the original “Frasier” sitcom, Daphne Moon (portrayed by Jane Leeves) was humorously depicted as having no talent for cooking whatsoever. Her attempts at helping Frasier and Niles open a restaurant ended in disaster, and many of Frasier’s dinner parties were marred by her poor cooking skills. However, her abilities in physical therapy far surpassed anything she could achieve with a fondue pot.
It might be prudent for David to avoid all kitchen appliances such as blenders, ovens, and sharp knives, regardless of the quality of the ham he intends to prepare, since his main issue seems unrelated to cooking.
