As a seasoned movie buff with decades of horror fandom under my belt, I can’t help but feel a shiver of anticipation down my spine as the iconic Crystal Lake series is revived once more. The appointment of Brad Caleb Kane as showrunner for this new chapter in the Friday the 13th saga is nothing short of exhilarating.
The reboot of the “Friday the 13th” prequel series titled “Crystal Lake,” which was initially announced in 2022, has a new leader at the helm following the departure of its previous showrunner, Bryan Fuller. Although Fuller was dismissed from the project this summer, the series is not cancelled and it seems that A24 and Peacock have found an appropriate candidate to breathe life into this beloved ’80s slasher for the modern streaming age.
As reported by Variety, Brad Caleb Kane has been appointed as the creator, head of production, and executive producer for the series “Crystal Lake“. Notably, this isn’t Kane’s first venture into developing prequels to well-known horror movies. He recently completed his role as co-showrunner and executive producer on “IT: Welcome to Derry“. Apart from these projects, Kane has also contributed to shows like “Fringe“, “Black Sails“, and “Warrior“. When news of his new role broke, Kane issued a statement regarding his involvement with “Crystal Lake“.
“Ever since I first saw Jason Voorhees pop an eye out of its socket (in stunning 3D!) at the age of 8, I’ve felt drawn to the world of The Masked Killer. My youth was deeply intertwined with the era of slasher films, and none have left a greater impact than ‘Friday The 13th.’ I can’t express enough my excitement for the chance to add a piece to this legendary series, especially alongside courageous collaborators like Peacock and A24.”
Crystal Lake Troubles Behind the Scenes
The production of “Crystal Lake” was initially announced in 2022, with Bryan Fuller at the helm. Given Fuller’s impressive track record on shows like “Hannibal,” “Dead Like Me,” “Pushing Daisies,” and “American Gods,” viewers were eagerly anticipating the series. However, fans of Fuller’s work are also aware that he often doesn’t stick around for long; he either leaves early in a show’s run or even before it starts, as was the case with “Star Trek: Discovery.” After months of speculation about issues behind the scenes, in May 2024, Fuller was dismissed from the series. Reports indicate that Fuller’s creative vision didn’t align with what Peacock and A24 were aiming for, leading to disagreements on various aspects of the series.
Although fans may never fully grasp Fuller’s vision for Crystal Lake, there remains a palpable sense of anticipation regarding what Brad Caleb Kane is set to contribute to the series. This upcoming installment will be the first fresh addition to the Friday the 13th franchise since the reboot, which was launched 15 years back. Notably, this marks the longest interval between new entries in the franchise, surpassing the previous eight-year gap spanning from 1993’s Jason Goes To Hell: The Final Friday to 2002’s Jason X. Apart from this summer’s In a Violent Nature, which can be considered an unofficial Friday the 13th film in spirit, fans haven’t had much else to look forward to.
A portion of the delay was caused by a secret legal dispute between original writer Vic Miller and producer Sean S. Cunningham over the rights to the ‘Friday the 13th’ franchise. Currently, it appears that Miller retains control over elements from his initial ‘Friday the 13th’ script, which forms the basis for the ‘Crystal Lake’ series. On the other hand, Cunningham holds the rights to the character of Jason Voorhees, who dons a hockey mask and is the main slasher, as this aspect was introduced in later installments, specifically the sequel and ‘Friday the 13th Part III’. Despite potential delays in the release of ‘Crystal Lake’, recent horror reboots such as 2018’s ‘Halloween’ and this summer’s ‘Alien: Resurrection’ have demonstrated that there remains an interested audience for revivals of iconic franchises.
