From The World Of John Wick: Ballerina's Trailer Is Totally Badass, But I Think It's A Bittersweet Watch For Two Different Reasons

As a dedicated fan of the John Wick franchise, I’ve been through the highs and lows with these films, and the latest trailer for “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina” has me feeling a mix of excitement and melancholy. On one hand, Ana de Armas is set to bring Eve Macarro to life in this spinoff, and her raw talent and physicality promise an electrifying performance. I’ve been impressed by her work in No Time To Die and The Gray Man, so I have high hopes for Ballerina.

Our scheduled trip to what’s now called “The World of John Wick” was originally planned for this summer, but the movie that used to be called “Ballerina” has been pushed back to movies set for release in 2025. The reason given is that Lionsgate and director Len Wiseman wanted to increase the action in the spinoff led by Ana de Armas.

As a devoted fan, I must say that the initial trailer has left me utterly thrilled! If the first glimpse is anything to go by, it seems the decision to continue this series was undeniably wise – this installment promises to be nothing short of awesome. However, there are a few aspects that make this sneak peek into John Wick’s world, set during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, bittersweet in the long run.

Ana De Armas Is Going To Totally Own Her John Wick Spinoff

How about we kick things off with some positive notes? While it’s true that the trailer for “Ballerina” might stir a touch of melancholy, there’s plenty to cheer about! The standout aspect is undeniably Ana de Armas’ portrayal of Eve Macarro in this midquel within the “John Wick” franchise. Frankly, I’ve never had any doubts about her ability to shine in this role, given her impressive performances in “No Time To Die” and “The Gray Man.” Her Cuban acting prowess, coupled with her remarkable physicality, has left an indelible impression.

In Ana de Armas’ recent interview, she expressed her excitement for the upcoming movie “Ballerina” because the revised scenes from the reshoots for its 2025 release seem crucial. It seems that postponing the film into another year may have been a wise choice, as it could potentially lead to an even better final product.

While From the World of John Wick: Ballerina offers plenty of entertainment in its opening, there’s an undercurrent of melancholy too. Some of this stems from the events depicted in John Wick: Chapter 4, and a touch of somber realism is interwoven as well.

Why Ballerina’s Trailer Is Such A Bittersweet Watch

Following Lance Reddick’s unexpected passing in 2023, his roles within this series have become bittersweet recollections of his skill. As the reliable concierge at The Continental in New York, Reddick and his portrayal of Charon have consistently been key elements in this growing action series. Additionally, the character’s shocking execution ordered by the High Table in the following film adds another raw emotion to grapple with.

After the emotional conclusion of “John Wick: Chapter 4,” where it appeared that John Wick (Keanu Reeves) met his end in battle, there’s been a stir. The surprise return of John in this footage carries a heavy mood, but for an entirely new set of reasons. This turmoil is strictly thematic in nature, as John seems to be laid to rest following his fierce fight against Marquis Vincent Bisset de Gramont (Bill Skarsgård), leaving us to believe he succumbed to his wounds from the final battle.

It’s clear that this film could serve as a prequel to Ana de Armas’ character and possibly a spinoff following Donnie Yen’s Caine post-“John Wick: Chapter 4”. Given the universe of “John Wick”, it makes sense for fresh characters to enter the scene. However, it’s tough not to feel the impact of Keanu Reeves’ iconic exit as John Wick, a sleeper hit assassin, yet the prospect of seeing him back in action again brings some comfort.

The movie titled “John Wick: Ballerina” is set to hit theaters on June 6, 2025, as of now. But since the trailer mentions it’s coming soon, this release date could shift at any moment. For those who are eager to experience more heartache, John Wick: Chapter 4 is currently streaming and can be added to your Prime Video account via Starz.
