The much-loved board game Frosthaven is making its debut in the digital space.
games Arc Games and Snapshot Games have unveiled a strategic role-playing game adaption, which transfers the game’s tactical elements and cooperative play onto computer platforms.
At the Future Games Show: Spring Showcase, I was thrilled to catch a glimpse of the upcoming adaptation, which promises to stay true to its roots while enhancing the gaming experience specifically for digital platforms.
In 2020, Isaac Childres developed Frosthaven as a follow-up to Gloomhaven and achieved tremendous success on Kickstarter, amassing approximately $13 million, making it one of the most successful tabletop games ever created.
Currently, Snapshot Games is working on the video game adaptation, under the tutelage of Julian Gollop (from X-COM). Children’s role ensures that the final product stays true to its original essence.
Just like its board game counterpart, Frosthaven offers a challenging experience through tactical battles, outpost administration, and resource governance. It can be played individually or in cooperation with up to four players online.
In order to survive the tough environment presented by the game, players need to thoughtfully manage risks and rewards while selecting team characters that complement each other effectively.
The closed trial period is set to take place between March 27 and April 24, 2025, during which time there will be six character types, twenty missions, and preliminary outpost functionalities.
This year, the game is scheduled for release on Steam Early Access, allowing players’ feedback to guide further development by Snapshot Games.
Reframe for a simpler understanding: The modification simplifies the initial process of Frosthaven, eliminating much of the setup, yet it retains the same strategic depth.
Both long-time enthusiasts and recent arrivals can eagerly anticipate exploring its frozen realm upon its PC release, which is expected towards the end of this year.
