Future Halo Games Will Be Made In Unreal Engine 5

As a lifelong Halo fan who’s witnessed the highs and lows of Master Chief’s epic journey, this Unreal Engine 5 announcement feels like a long-awaited breath of fresh air. The franchise has been my companion through thick and thin, and seeing it evolve with time is nothing short of exhilarating.

343 Industries revealed at the Halo World Championships on Sunday that they intend to construct the future of the Halo series using Unreal Engine 5. This unexpected announcement left fans in awe as they witnessed the studio’s bold decision to reinvent the franchise. The iconic Master Chief will be part of this exciting transition.

During the event, a six-and-a-half-minute video was played, offering sneak peeks at the revamped graphics and the iconic character, Master Chief. ‘A New Dawn’ presents a collection of in-progress images and brief scenes that will influence the direction of the Halo series in the future.

The announcement came right before the final match of the tournament, which was held at the Seattle Convention Center from October 4 to 6.

This announcement signifies that 343 Industries is now known as Halo Studios. This name change aligns with their ongoing commitment to creating more Halo games in the future, with upcoming projects planned to utilize Unreal Engine 5.

They gave a sneak peek of multiple future projects while keeping the finer details secret. As for Halo, lead animator Marcellis Wentz said, “I believe fans will be thrilled about Halo’s future due to the opportunities presented by Unreal.

As a devoted fan, I’ve eagerly awaited the next chapter in Halo’s epic saga for quite some time. It’s incredible to think that the Slipspace engine, the heart of this masterpiece, is nearly 25 years old! Progress never stands still, and with superior alternatives now available, it’s no longer practical to rely solely on a system of such vintage. Chris Matthews, director at Halo Studios, explained the situation best when he said, “While we’ve been tirelessly developing Slipspace, there are features in Unreal that Epic has been refining for years, which remain unattainable within our engine.” It’s an exciting time as we look forward to what this change will bring!

Regardless of this major shift, Halo Infinite will continue to run on the Slipspace Engine. However, unfortunately, 343 Industries has decided to move away from seasons, hence Season 6 will not be released.

Upon its release, Halo Infinite received relatively modest reviews due to the scarcity of content. Players criticized it for lacking crucial narrative elements, poor progression, unoriginal map layouts, and an identity that seemed overly similar to modern shooter games. Some even claimed that it no longer embodied the essence of Halo as they once knew it.

The franchise has faced multiple challenges, particularly due to the cancellation of Paramount’s Halo TV series following its second season. This incident was yet another significant blow to Master Chief’s legacy, which may have prompted Microsoft and 343 Industries to reconsider their approach and explore alternative perspectives.

Today’s announcement brings exciting changes for long-standing Halo enthusiasts. Essentially, the Halo series is undergoing a significant transformation in terms of its conceptual direction. This transformation implies a fresh start for Halo, supported by a robust, cutting-edge engine.
