As a gamer who’s been through countless missions and battles, I can appreciate the resilience and timelessness embodied by G-SHOCK’s Iconic Styles series. These watches are like my trusty sidekicks, always there when I need them, whether I’m scaling the digital mountains of a role-playing game or navigating the real world.
As a dedicated gamer and watch enthusiast, I’m taking a nostalgic journey through time with G-SHOCK’s Iconic Styles series. This latest lineup of timepieces from the legendary Japanese watchmaker is like a trip back in time, starting all the way from 1983 and moving into the new millennium. This era was marked by rapid innovation and timeless ingenuity that shaped G-SHOCK’s most iconic models, such as the foundational DW-5000C. Each watch in this collection, including the DW-5000, DW-5600, DW-6900, GA-110 and GA-2100, has been painstakingly crafted to mirror its original counterpart, even down to the subtlest details that only true fans might notice. For diehard collectors like myself, the Iconic Styles series is a testament to G-SHOCK’s rich design history and offers retro throwbacks that are as reliable and fresh as ever.
G-SHOCK designs this collection as a dedicated conservator. Originally, these models gained popularity among urban sporting groups such as surfers, skateboarders, and parkour practitioners. However, the brand’s fame skyrocketed due to its association with cinema, hip-hop and rap icons, and the cultural influence of influential fashion brands during the early to mid-’90s.
As a devoted fan, I find the distinctive octagonal face design of my digital DW-5000R-1A watch echoes the iconic DW-5000C model that pioneered a shock-absorbing structure. Similar to its predecessor, it boasts a sturdy stainless steel case, while the band and bezel have been upgraded with eco-friendly resin derived from organic sources. The design meticulously replicates the original band length and the precise placement of dimples embellishing the bezel. Vibrant colors like red, yellow, and blue, reminiscent of the brand, celebrate technologies enhancing water and shock resistance. A classic brick pattern graces the dial display, just as it did on the original. Nostalgic touches are evident in the mirror-polished screw-lock caseback, engraved with “SHOCK Resistant” lettering. This watch incorporates a multi-function alarm, flash alert, and Super Illuminator LED backlight – features absent in the second-generation DW-5600RL-1.
Instead of the rectangular design found in the DW-5600 series, the digital DW-6900RL-1 stands out with a striking circular watch face. This model marked another significant milestone for the brand in 1995, when it introduced a Triple Graph display featuring a front button. The circular dials complement the watch face, sitting on top of an LCD screen that’s enhanced with traditional coating, printing, and surface finishes. Additionally, the case, bezel, and band are made from bio-based resin materials.
In 2010, the GA-110 was introduced, preserving the circular design of its predecessor, the DW-6900. The GA-110RL-1A offers an upgrade with a combined analog-digital display, housed in a large case and boasting rivet-style accents at the bezel. The GA-110 series is known for its steampunk aesthetic. It includes components made from bio-based resin, a millisecond stopwatch, a speedometer, and JIS class-1 magnetic resistance. To round off the collection, the GA-2100 line offers a minimalist analog-digital display in a stylish, modern format inspired by the original DW-5000.
Each model comes equipped with a countdown timer, stopwatch, 20-bar water resistance, shock resistance, and distinctive specifications tailored to their respective collections. The Iconic Styles collection embodies the durability inherent in Kikuo Ibe’s timeless DW-5000C design. As timeless shapes, these models harmonize with modern fashion sensibilities while maintaining a design philosophy centered on rugged aesthetics and functional practicality.
