As a seasoned gamer and art enthusiast who’s been following Takashi Murakami‘s work for quite some time now, I can’t help but feel a rush of excitement upon hearing about this limited-edition t-shirt inspired by his latest exhibition at Gagosian Burlington Arcade gallery in London. The fusion of traditional Japanese art and contemporary sensibilities is something that always catches my eye, and the camouflage-like Japanese landscape illustration on this shirt is no exception.
In London, the Gagosian gallery located in Burlington Arcade has created a limited edition collection of 200 t-shirts, based on Takashi Murakami’s artwork “Rakuchū-Rakugai-zu Byōbu: Iwasa Matabei RIP” (2023–24), which serves as the main attraction for his latest exhibition.
In Murakami’s gallery showcase, you’ll find five fresh floral pieces inspired by his nihonga (Japanese traditional painting) background and the emphasis on organic shapes in this art form. The exhibit harmoniously blends traditional roots with modern aesthetics, much like the shirt design that boasts a camouflage-style Japanese landscape artwork and recurring flower themes reminiscent of Murakami’s signature style. Each purchased t-shirt will include a free collectible Lucky Cat trading card from Murakami.Flowers series, with eleven unique designs available, and three of them being extremely rare.
In addition to a t-shirt and various Murakami merchandise, you can also find the latest catalog, “Takashi Murakami: An Arrow through History,” at the Gagosian store. This catalog will be available alongside the exhibition, which coincides with Murakami’s solo presentation titled “Japanese Art History à la Takashi Murakami” at Gagosian’s Grosvenor Hill gallery in London. The exhibition will run concurrently with his solo presentation during this period.
On December 10, the exclusive line of t-shirts will be available for purchase at the Gagosian Store located within Burlington Arcade. Since they are limited edition, they’ll be distributed on a “who gets here first” basis.
