`Galactus’ Size is a Problem in The Fantastic Four: First Steps`

It seems that it’s become customary to debut a new Fantastic Four movie approximately halfway through each decade. The first major release of the Fantastic Four was in 2005, followed by Josh Trank’s reboot in 2015, and the MCU’s “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” is slated for summer 2025. Yesterday, we got a first look at the movie trailer, which had many intriguing aspects, such as what appears to be a subtle reference to Captain America. However, what worries me now is the portrayal of Galactus in this upcoming Marvel film, specifically his size.

To begin with, I’d like to express my confidence that the Galactus portrayed in The Fantastic Four: First Steps will deliver a satisfying adaptation of the cosmic being known for devouring planets. Despite the fact that his face wasn’t revealed in the trailer, the initial impression is promising, as Ralph Ineson brings this Galactus to life as a towering humanoid adorned with a horned helmet, rather than the planet-sized cloud from Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Nonetheless, some might argue that he seems… somewhat diminutive in comparison?

It’s unusual, given that the trailer depicts Galactus looming over New York City and the Statue of Liberty on a 1960s-inspired, futuristic Earth within the Marvel multiverse. However, having followed Marvel Comics for more than two decades and read numerous Galactus stories, it appears that the film “First Steps” is portraying the character as a larger kaiju rather than the colossal, overpowering entity he’s typically depicted as in comic books.

‘Imagination Plays a Crucial Role as the Character Comes Alive Through Motion Capture’ (for ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’)

Following Natasha Lyonne’s recent revelation about her enigmatic character in the upcoming Fantastic Four, I’ve got a strong hunch about who she might be portraying in the initial steps of the series.

To clarify for those who may not be familiar with Galactus, he’s more akin to a deity or a natural force, not your typical supervillain. Few have been able to stand against him, one exception being when Reed Richards threatened to use the Ultimate Nullifier. Essentially, Galactus’ immense size is a significant manifestation of his power. Compared to a kaiju, he’s formidable, but it seems somewhat diminished if he ends up being the same height as Godzilla or King Kong.

I’m envisioning that “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” could explore an intriguing aspect of Galactus’ powers, specifically his ability to change size. Normally, he’s as large as a planet, but upon reaching Earth, he opts to shrink to the stature of a kaiju due to some pressing matter that demands his personal attention. This issue has been brought to his notice by his herald, Julia Garner’s Silver Surfer. Essentially, I aim for Galactus’ size to effectively portray him as one of the most powerful entities in the universe. I’m not entirely convinced that having him on par with the Titans from the MonsterVerse would suffice.

As I mentioned before, there’s no scarcity of exciting elements in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, such as the Silver Surfer, H.E.R.B.I.E., the rumored appearance of Mole Man, and a Thing that seems to have been taken directly from a Jack Kirby comic book illustration. The film premieres on July 25.
