As a fashion enthusiast who has grown up in the era of bold and vibrant pop culture, I found GCDS SS25 collection to be an absolute delight! The Italian brand, led by the dynamic duo Giuliano and Giordano Calza, never fails to surprise me with their unique take on contemporary trends.
Established a decade ago by Italian siblings Giuliano and Giordano Calza, GCDS doesn’t hesitate to incorporate pop culture references into its designs, as demonstrated in their SS25 show. Instead of relying on the brand’s typical bold prints and graphics, this collection leaned on vibrant colors and flattering shapes to express a modern, daring spirit.
The performance commenced with a burst of vibrant green visuals, reminiscent of the bright hue associated with Charli XCX’s 2024 album “Brat”. One model donned a translucent mesh tank top and glossy denim jeans in shades of green, while another carried a neon green furry duffel bag. Bold color choices abounded, such as collegiate yellow, ultraviolet, and a fiery Barbie pink. For some, the lush green stage and sporty ensembles might have brought to mind Luca Guadagnino’s popular film “Challengers”, starring Zendaya, which focuses on a competitive tennis-playing throuple. The nylon tracksuits and mini skirts in shades of tennis ball green with titanium white seemed to reinforce the theme.
As I gazed upon this ensemble, my eyes were instantly drawn to a deep V-neck bodysuit that subtly guided them downwards, creating an undeniable allure. This V-shape was reimagined on a sleeveless mesh suit, narrowing towards the waist to reveal a tantalizing glimpse of the oblique area. On one end of the spectrum, high-exposure pieces were paired with active bottoms or sheer mesh tights, while on the other, sophisticated satin trousers and flowing fishtail skirts added an air of elegance. For those not paying close attention, delightful Sanrio characters like Hello Kitty (on a yellow bra) and Badts Maru (on a black crochet tank with appliques on the straps) could easily be missed.
In summary, the connection to Charli XCX was indeed validated through the final number, “Everything is Romantic,” an enduring camp techno ballad characterized by its unyielding refrain of “Fall in love, again and again…” Despite a variety of references, the collection exuded elegance with soft, luxurious materials and bold, seductive silhouettes. This cohesive blend effectively conveyed the style ethos of the Calza brothers, who have consistently embodied maximalism within their brand.
