With Gene Hackman’s passing a couple of weeks ago, people are still remembering his illustrious career and paying tribute to him. As a result, some of his iconic films have been rediscovered on streaming platforms. For instance, the 1998 action thriller “Enemy of the State,” directed by Tony Scott and starring Will Smith, has seen a resurgence in popularity.
27 years post its initial cinema release, “Enemy of the State” has regained popularity on Amazon’s Prime Video. As we speak, the movie ranks #6 on the charts, with “You’re Cordially Invited”, a recent comedy, in the 5th position and “Jurassic World” from 2015 holding down the 7th spot. Back in ’98, “Enemy of the State” made $250 million at the box office on a budget of just $90 million. It earned $20 million during its opening weekend, but unfortunately, it didn’t manage to take the top spot; that honor went to “The Rugrats Movie”, which brought in an impressive $27 million upon release.
Titled “Enemy of the State“, the movie centers around lawyer Robert Clayton Dean, played by Smith, who becomes a marked man after he stumbles upon damaging evidence against a band of unscrupulous NSA agents. Besides Hackman, the film boasts performances from Jon Voight, Regina King, Jake Busey, and Gabriel Byrne. Although it was criticized for being fictitious, this movie is renowned for its prescience regarding government surveillance, particularly in the aftermath of the 2001 tragedy of September 11th.
Fans React to ‘Enemy of the State’ For the First Time
Since the passing of actor Harrison Ford on February 26, there has been a surge of new reviews for the film “Enemy of the State” emerging online platforms like Letterboxd. People are expressing their thoughts about it, nearly three decades after its initial release in cinemas. User Michael Stark commented: “I had no idea Tony Scott’s exploration of surveillance began so early on.
As a film critic, I’ve long admired his work, noting its thematic undertones. However, I never anticipated such intense exploration until after the 9/11 events. Upon reflection, it appears I underestimated him significantly, as this new piece seems to be an unabashed dive into that very theme.
In a humorous review, Christopher Luke compared “The Conversation 2” to another film starring Gene Hackman, stating that “Tony Scott is a genius, and long live Gene Hackman!” Similarly, JB Holbrook on Letterboxd said, “My second Tony Scott-Gene Hackman movie this week, and it’s another great one! An all-star cast and a film that never slows down. I had a blast with it, but now I’m worried my entire house might be bugged by the NSA for the next week.
If you haven’t experienced it yet or simply wish to revisit a stellar performance by Hackman, you might want to catch Enemy of the State currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. Alternatively, you can rent or buy it from various Video On Demand platforms.
