ABC’s latest police drama titled “High Potential” has sparked interest right off the bat. Featuring Kaitlin Olson, known for “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia,” as the main character, this show offers a fresh take on an established genre. Olson portrays Morgan Gillory, an eccentric single mom who also happens to be a high-intellect (or genius with a 160 IQ). The contrast between her extraordinary intelligence and vibrant personality, along with her distinctive fashion sense (such as animal prints, bold colors, and mini-skirts), adds depth to the storyline.
When she accidentally solves a murder using her knack for finding hidden clues, she gets hired as a consultant for the LAPD’s major crimes unit. Her partner is Detective Adam Karadec, portrayed by Daniel Sunjata – one of several familiar faces on the show, having previously appeared in “Graceland”, “Manifest”, and “Grey’s Anatomy”. Initially reluctant to work with a civilian, particularly one who differs so much from himself, Karadec soon finds himself won over by Morgan, as well as her team: Department Head Selena Soto (Judy Reyes), investigators Lev “Oz” Osman (Deniz Akdeniz) and Daphne Forrester (Javicia Leslie).
Watching Morgan dismantle Karadec’s tough exterior or solve mysteries with her brilliant mind is entertaining, but what truly captivates us is a glimpse into her personal life. With a teenage daughter, a young son who shares her special abilities, and a newborn baby girl, Morgan certainly has her work cut out for her. Fortunately, her amiable ex, Ludo Radovic (played by Taran Killam), steps in to manage things when Morgan’s crime-fighting duties keep her away. This diverse group creates an intriguing dynamic and offers a refreshing change from the gravity of Morgan’s role with the LAPD – although she does add a touch of fun to that as well.
The Plucky Drama Proves its Potential
The show, initially receiving average ratings upon its ABC debut, experienced a surge in popularity once it moved to streaming services. Within three days, its viewership skyrocketed by 220%, making it one of ABC’s most-watched dramas in years. Reminiscent of hit procedurals from the 2000s like “Castle”, “The Mentalist” on CBS, and “Bones” on Fox, this series offers a fresh take on police investigations and a captivating romantic subplot between its leading characters.
The atmosphere of “High Potential” is significantly lighter than the abundance of grimy crime series dominating both network TV and streaming platforms, offering a refreshing change of pace. The show primarily garners acclaim for Kaitlin Olson’s portrayal, who flawlessly embodies Morgan’s enthusiasm, transforming a genre often perceived as dull and repetitive into an engaging and entertaining viewing experience.
In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar, Olson discussed her affection for her character, Morgan. She stated that she appreciates the role because it allows her to portray various facets of womanhood. “Morgan is a boss,” she said, “yet she’s also insecure and has self-doubts. She’s troubled by her own mind, and she worries about her children. These elements make her relatable for many women.” It’s evident that Morgan, despite her extraordinary circumstances, is a complex character, and Olson’s talent brings believability and relatability to the role.
‘High Potential’ Finale Leaves fans With More Questions Than Answers
Despite ABC’s show, “High Potential,” setting new records, it has also faced some criticism. Morgan’s outstanding performance tends to overshadow the other actors, leaving viewers eager for more depth. Given that the series had a brief 13-episode season due to Olson’s dedication to “It’s Always Sunny,” it’s understandable that the show is still finding its footing. The season finale was particularly contentious, ending not with one, but two unexpected cliffhangers, leaving the audience in suspense.
Two Mysteries to Solve
The final episode’s main plot was exceptionally engaging because it directly involved the LAPD team and carried significant implications. A man who had infiltrated Oz’s grief support group started kidnapping members, leaving enigmatic puzzles and riddles that only Morgan could decipher. Due to the urgency of saving lives – including Oz’s own – Morgan found herself racing against time to solve these mysteries. Unlike typical murder cases, this antagonist gave off an unsettling aura, which grew even more intense when Morgan recognized that he had intentionally crossed paths with her and her children in public. For the first time, the case was left unresolved at the end of the episode; instead, the kidnapper is still at large, taunting Morgan with a note suggesting he looks forward to “playing with her” again.
For added complexity in Morgan’s life, the final episode of High Potential also included a significant development regarding a case deeply personal to her. Throughout the series, viewers uncover that Morgan’s first husband, Roman – Ava’s father – went missing 15 years prior while shopping for diapers. Initially, Ava believes he abandoned them, but Morgan remains convinced that something sinister occurred. As part of her work with the LAPD, she requests an investigation into his disappearance. In the finale, it is revealed that Roman was secretly working as an informant for the FBI at the time of his disappearance. Karadec uses his Bureau connections to provide more information, and in a shocking twist at the end of the episode, he reveals that Roman is alive.
The Finale Sets Up Future Seasons
Despite some potential discontent due to two unresolved plot twists, these situations effectively pave the way for season 2 (already commissioned) by providing a smooth transition for Morgan and the LAPD, both professionally and emotionally. The cunning kidnapper seems primed to serve as a lasting adversary for Morgan, offering an intellectually stimulating foe who can truly test her exceptional abilities. Given the strength of our lead character, such a formidable opponent is crucial; otherwise, each case would be too simple for her to solve, and the show’s appeal might swiftly dwindle.
As a movie enthusiast, I must admit that the intrigue surrounding Roman’s 15-year absence piques my curiosity even more. So far, Ava has been our main protagonist, but this new development promises to thrust the teenager into the limelight, adding depth to the narrative. Moreover, it provides a glimpse into Morgan’s maternal struggles and how she navigates such a significant disruption in her family life. This twist also deepens Morgan’s connection with Karadec, who is keen on uncovering the truth while safeguarding her from potential danger.
In Season 2, we might find the mystery persisting or Roman popping up again; regardless, there’s an abundance of suspense waiting to hook viewers even more. The series High Potential is captivating audiences, and with its impressive 96% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, this quirky procedural could have a lasting impact – it’s definitely worth tuning in.
