George Clooney got his Sardi’s caricature on Thursday, following his first performance on Broadway in the play “Good Night, and Good Luck” this past spring.
When asked to sign his portrait, Clooney quipped: “You got it. Brad Pitt.”
Additionally, Clooney playfully pointed out the contrast in his hair shades; while the portrait shows his original gray strands, his present locks are darkened to black for the character of Edward R. Murrow in “Good Night, and Good Luck.
Apart from marking his first performance on Broadway, Clooney also collaborated with Grant Heslov in penning “Good Night, and Good Luck“. This was after they had written the 2005 film adaptation of the script. The play premiered at the Winter Garden Theatre on April 3, and it narrates Murrow and his CBS team as they confront Senator Joseph McCarthy.
At the popular Sardi’s restaurant situated in the heart of the theater district, it has become a tradition to recognize chosen Broadway celebrities by creating and displaying caricatures of them, which remain on showcase for many years.
Richard Kind, a lifelong friend of Clooney’s, humorously contrasted their careers during his speech prior to the portrait unveiling. He playfully pointed out that while Clooney had a grand entrance in Hollywood, he, Richard, had spent years performing in theater productions all over the country.
The previous summer, I starred in ‘Bye Bye Birdie’ at the Kennedy Center. Six months later, I found myself on Broadway. As if that weren’t surprising enough, this guy suddenly arrives in town, sporting a new hair color,” he quipped playfully.
It’s quite impressive to announce that you’re transforming a remarkable film into a stage play,” continued [they], followed by a humorous remark, “Let’s avoid discussing the finances as it can get rather disheartening.
Later on, his demeanor became more somber when he shared that Clooney had sent him a photo of the published play’s cover, and expressed “He’s so proud of it.” This sentiment was echoed by Clooney himself.
The play is quite significant and enjoyable, not only because of George, but also due to the brilliant direction by David Cromer. It’s absolutely stunning. He further praised it as an exceptional production.
Participants at the evening’s early reveal were Broadway theater proprietors, creators, and the cast of the play “Good Night, and Good Luck“, which included Ilana Glazer and Clark Gregg. They all hurriedly departed following the event to meet their 7 p.m. performance time.
