George Clooney had a different outcome in mind for the presidential election, but it doesn’t seem like he’ll let it upset him too much. During his recent appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert to promote the Broadway adaptation of his critically acclaimed film Good Night, and Good Luck, Clooney discussed Donald Trump’s win. It’s worth mentioning that Clooney was an open advocate for Vice President Kamala Harris during the election.
Despite Trump’s presidency not being what Clooney desired, the actor and director supported the democratic system by expressing this view during his conversation with Stephen Colbert.
“What am I supposed to do? You know, storm the f**king Capitol?”
George Clooney was speaking about the January 6th, 2021 incident at the Capitol where around 2,000 to 2,500 protesters stormed the building. Some of these individuals were involved in theft, property damage, and attacks on Capitol police officers and journalists. Since resuming his presidency, Trump has granted clemency to approximately 1,500 of these rioters.
Clooney remarked that, being a lifelong Democrat, he’s experienced many electoral defeats. However, he emphasized, “This is the essence of democracy; this is its functioning.
The plan didn’t succeed as planned, but that’s just how things go sometimes. It’s a characteristic of democratic systems – there are those who support an idea and those who don’t, yet we manage to maintain our friendships, and we’ll all navigate this situation together.
In July last year, Clooney penned an opinion piece for The New York Times, urging then-candidate Joe Biden to withdraw from his presidential bid. Titled “I Admire Joe Biden. Yet, We Need a Different Nominee”, the article was prompted by a debate performance that raised doubts about Biden’s cognitive faculties. In the piece, Clooney acknowledged Biden’s admirable character and ethics, but expressed concern that he might not be able to overcome the challenge of time.
In summary, towards the end of his opinion piece, Clooney commended Biden for “rescuing democracy in 2020,” which was a subtle jab at Trump. This remark prompted a sharp response from Trump on the platform Truth Social, where he criticized both “George Clooney, the phony film star” and “Crooked Joe” in a lengthy diatribe. It’s worth noting that this exchange took place around the same time Biden withdrew from the election race. Later, Clooney expressed his admiration for Biden again, describing his decision to step down as “the most unselfish act anyone has done since George Washington.
George Clooney’s Post-Election Chess Lesson
Originally hailing from a Democratic household in Kentucky, George Clooney ultimately supported Vice President Kamala Harris during her campaign. However, the outcome was not what he had anticipated as Donald Trump clinched victory with 312 electoral votes (compared to Harris’s 226), and garnered close to half of the popular vote. In a light-hearted moment, Clooney mentioned that his 7-year-old son is an avid chess player, alluding to the unpredictable nature of political games.
He becomes angry, so I say to him reassuringly, ‘Calm down, you shook his hand, tell him ‘Well played, I’ll beat you next time.’ Remember, you should always follow those rules, such as acknowledging the good game and wishing him success. Our country needs it, and in three-and-a-half years, we’ll meet again to see where things lead.
There’s a sense of unease among some Americans regarding our future direction, as Donald Trump has hinted at extending his presidency beyond the limits set by the 22nd Amendment, which restricts a president from serving more than two terms. In reference to this, Colbert mentioned this possibility to Clooney.
“You know you play by the rules, but both sides have to believe there should be rules.”
George Clooney will soon appear in Noah Baumbach’s coming-of-age comedy-drama titled “Jay Kelly“, where he heads a distinguished cast that includes Adam Sandler, Laura Dern, Riley Keough, and Billy Crudup. The film, “Jay Kelly“, is planned for release on Netflix this year.
