George Condo‘s recent exhibits titled “Pastels” have taken control of Sprüth Magers and Hauser & Wirth in New York, showcasing his innovative methods with pastel art. Renowned for challenging norms, Condo’s new creations forego preliminary sketches, instead using spontaneous movements, gesso layers, and vibrant color areas to explore the intricacies of human psychology.
At Hauser & Wirth, a collection of fragmented, geometric portraits—which Condo refers to as his “unusual figures”—expose the internal struggles of the psyche. Bold color segments clash sharply on their faces, mirroring the complex and diverse aspects of thought.
Simultaneously, Sprüth Magers gallery showcases vibrant color arrangements alongside stark black-and-white pastels, with fluid pigments and intersecting shapes emphasizing motion and rhythm rather than figures. Titles such as “Centrifuge,” “Chaotic Combustion,” “No Direction Home,” and “Open Forms” suggest the dynamic energy and disorder inherent in these pieces.
These displays collectively highlight Condo’s vibrant color palette and exceptional skill in abstract art, providing a distinct perspective on the complexity and dynamism of human existence.
