George R.R. Martin Finally Explains Why The Winds of Winter Is Still Unpublished

As a devoted fan of George R.R. Martin’s enchanting saga, A Song of Ice and Fire (or Game of Thrones, as it’s more popularly known), I can’t help but empathize with the author’s long-standing struggle to complete The Winds of Winter. Having followed his journey since the first book was published in 1996, I’ve grown accustomed to the ups and downs that come with such a monumental project.

Prolific fantasy author George R.R. Martin has been working on his A Song of Ice and Fire (a.k.a. Game of Thrones) novels since 1996, when the first book in the saga was published. As with any long-term project, there will undoubtedly be things that Martin wishes he’d changed or done differently. During a recent lecture at Oxford Writers’ House, where Martin discussed his acclaimed series, the author revealed the biggest thing he wished he’d done differently in his career, and it’s what Game of Thrones fans have been begging for over the last 13 years.

As a devoted fan of epic tales, I can’t help but share my excitement about the ongoing saga surrounding George R.R. Martin’s masterpiece, “A Song of Ice and Fire.” While “Game of Thrones” concluded its final season in 2019, and the captivating spinoff series “House of the Dragon” is currently developing its third installment, it’s important to remember that the core book saga isn’t quite complete yet.

As a follower, I might rephrase it as: “Given the chance, I would certainly make more changes than one. If I could alter just one aspect of my books, it would be to have them completed. Looking back, I wish I had finished it years ago… that’s the change I believe I would most want to make.”

For more than a decade now, I, along with countless other fans, have eagerly awaited George R.R. Martin’s next masterpiece, “The Winds of Winter.” Over the last 13 years, the author has graced us with tantalizing tidbits and hints about its progress, yet the book remains unfinished. Intriguingly, he has offered a variety of reasons for this delay.

During our chat, Martin admitted that the reason ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ isn’t finished yet is due to his method of writing each part of the story as a separate chapter. He mentioned renowned science fiction author Gene Wolfe, who wrote the highly acclaimed ‘Book of the New Sun’ series, composing all four books in the series before publishing the first one. Martin wishes he could have structured ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’ similarly, planning the entire series beforehand.

After completing the fourth book, he noticed inconsistencies in the first one that didn’t seem fitting anymore – areas where the narrative had strayed or evolved. This allowed him to go back and make revisions to the initial book. It wasn’t until all four books were done that Gene submitted the collection, and the series was eventually purchased and published.

To be frank, I can’t help but feel a pang of envy when I see others accomplish what I, for one, have never managed – and truthfully, could not have accomplished, even in my current state. Contrary to some assumptions, I don’t spend all this time writing The Winds of Winter because I fancy myself the next Gene Wolfe. Quite the contrary, I wish it were done years ago. If there’s one thing I would change, it’s the pace at which this project is progressing.

As a devoted movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the epic sagas “Game of Thrones” and its prequel, “House of the Dragon,” are currently streaming on Max. Mark your calendars for June 15, 2025, as the next “Game of Thrones” spinoff, “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” is set to premiere on both HBO and Max!
