Though George R.R. Martin may still be taking his time completing the next installment in the “Game of Thrones” series, he has certainly been keeping busy elsewhere. For instance, he’s made a significant impact in the video game industry through his collaboration with FromSoftware on the critically acclaimed and record-breaking title, “Elden Ring,” released in 2022. This fantasy adventure game is already being hailed as one of the greatest ever made, largely due to the exceptional worldbuilding done by Martin and game director, Hidetaka Miyazaki. Given the success of his previous works, it’s not unreasonable to expect that “Elden Ring” might also be adapted for live-action in the future.
In an interview with IGN, the renowned author hinted at the possibility of an Elden Ring movie becoming a reality if discussions continue to progress. “I can’t reveal much,” Martin said, “but there is indeed discussion about creating a film based on Elden Ring.” It remains undisclosed whether a studio or director is currently in negotiations for the project, but it seems that an Elden Ring adaptation is increasingly likely in today’s market. As video game films and series continue to set new standards, an Elden Ring movie could emerge and swiftly gain global popularity, much like its virtual counterpart. Yet, for it to thrive, a suitable collaborative partner needs to step forward.
According to IGN, Miyazaki himself has mentioned the potential of an Elden Ring movie in the past. In an interview with The Guardian, he openly discussed the challenges of adapting the game into another format, stating that he or his team lacks the resources for such a project. Consequently, it appears that any Elden Ring film would necessitate a partnership with a highly capable collaborator, much like Hideo Kojima’s collaboration with A24 on his Death Stranding movie.
While I don’t object to alternative versions or adaptations of Elden Ring, such as a movie, I personally lack the expertise to create such content myself or with FromSoftware. Therefore, we would greatly benefit from a highly capable partner in this endeavor. Building trust and agreement on our goals would be crucial, but there is definitely interest.
More ‘Game of Thrones’ Spin-Offs Are on the Way… And a Movie
Although a film based on Elden Ring might offer George R.R. Martin a darker, more action-filled take on The Lord of the Rings, his Game of Thrones series continues to thrive. Despite his vocal criticism, particularly towards the final season and spin-off series House of the Dragon, Martin remains actively involved in these productions. Interestingly, he has expressed positive sentiments about the upcoming series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, set to debut on HBO this year. Furthermore, it’s possible that an Elden Ring movie isn’t the only one of Martin’s stories slated for a cinematic adaption in the near future.
In the previous year, there were numerous news articles stating that Warner Bros. is planning a movie revival for the beloved series “Game of Thrones”. At this moment, no specifics about the plot have been disclosed, but it’s intended to carry on the original narrative rather than branching off as a spin-off. Given the controversy and dissatisfaction surrounding the final season of the HBO show, it appears that the studio is looking to rectify its standing. It has long been HBO’s ambition to keep “Game of Thrones” on television, but with several spin-offs in the works for the small screen, Westeros may make its big screen debut eventually.
