As a lifelong enthusiast of all things medieval and fantastical, I must say, it’s a thrill to see the enigmatic George R.R. Martin back at his typewriter, crafting new chapters for the epic saga that is “A Song of Ice and Fire.” It seems that even the King of Westeros needs his time to grieve, as we learned about his recent loss and the profound impact it’s had on him.
Fans of “A Song of Ice and Fire” series can rejoice as author George R.R. Martin has confirmed he’s been penning “The Winds of Winter,” and more. Martin shared this encouraging update on his Not A Blog Blog, with readers noticing an increase in activity from the author over the past fortnight. Freshly back from a vacation, Martin hinted at sharing additional details about his travels soon. This week alone, Martin posted not just one but two blog updates, and another post that sparked some debate, which was later removed by the author himself. Martin wrote:
I created fresh content for The Winds of Winter (affirmative) and Blood & Fire (being the sequel to Fire & Blood, the second installment of my Targaryen history).
Martin has affirmed that his writing focus is primarily on “The Winds of Winter,” which is the 6th book in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, as well as “Blood & Fire,” a sequel to “Fire & Blood,” Martin’s Targaryen history collection.
The fifth novel in George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” series, titled “A Dance With Dragons,” was published in 2011. So far, he has planned for seven books, but there is no update whether this plan has been altered. However, it is known that “The Winds of Winter” will be the most extensive book in the series, as Martin himself stated in a blog post from 2022.
It seems that “The Winds of Winter” is shaping up to be a substantial read. Given its current progress, it might even surpass “A Storm of Swords” and “A Dance with Dragons,” the longest books in the series so far, in terms of size. However, I typically make revisions after completing the work, but I must complete it first.
Taking on George R.R. Martin’s epic works, such as “A Storm of Swords” with its 973 pages and “A Dance with Dragons” boasting 1,056 pages, undeniably feels like a substantial task. Some fans have pondered if Martin might split the story into two books, similar to how his initial draft for “A Game of Thrones” became “A Clash of Kings,” and his draft for “A Dance with Dragons” morphed into “A Feast for Crows.” Given the growing intricacy of these novels, they demand significant focus and time to complete. However, Martin reassured readers in July that he does not plan to do so.
Once ‘The Winds of Winter’ is completed, there won’t be subtle hints about it; instead, a significant announcement will be made…unfortunately, I can’t reveal the location or date.
George R.R. Martin Thinks About His Legacy
A week ago, Martin published a blog entry about “House of The Dragon” season 2 and its split response. Some viewers felt supported by the article because it mirrored some online criticisms concerning specific alterations and exclusions in the series adaptation. However, others perceived the post as unprofessional, arguing that it may have strained Martin’s relationship with HBO and the show’s creative team, who he has otherwise praised, particularly for certain acting performances.
The post was taken down shortly after. However, the fallout appears to be ongoing. If the scandalous post confirmed anything, it’s that Martin does pay attention to the fans’ online discourse, and that he is still deeply invested in the on-screen adaptations of his work. Martin has also been engaged in several other television projects, including Dark Winds, currently streaming on AMC+ and Netflix, and the upcoming HBO series The Hedge Knight, adapted from Martin’s Tales of Dunk & Egg novellas. Martin visited the set for The Hedge Knight in Northern Ireland in July.
In addition, Martin mentioned in his blog that this year, he experienced a profound loss when his longtime friend and fellow science fiction enthusiast, Howard Waldrop, passed away. The two had been pen pals since their high school days in 1963, and they remained close friends throughout the years. This event, combined with Martin’s recent visit to J.R.R. Tolkien’s grave, provides a poignant context for understanding Martin’s state of mind in 2024.
As a devoted fan, I’ve noticed that George R.R. Martin has openly shared his perspectives on J.R.R. Tolkien and the epic fantasy saga, “The Lord of the Rings.” In light of recent developments, it appears that George is relentlessly striving to strike a harmonious balance between his work and personal life, with the ultimate goal of wrapping up his masterpiece, “A Song of Ice & Fire” series. Various posts, interviews, and comments indicate that he’s deeply immersed in his projects yet simultaneously pondering his lasting impact on literature.
