George Rouy’s solo exhibition titled “The Bleed, Part II” is about to debut at Hauser & Wirth in Los Angeles, running from February 18th until June 1st. This exhibit serves as the second part of Rouy’s London presentation and features a fresh collection of works in his distinctive style marked by distortion and fleshy textures. The exhibition continues an investigation into human mass, multiplicity, and motion, further expanding upon these themes.
The exhibit derives its name from Rouy’s concept known as “the bleed,” which refers to the way figures and empty spaces merge on canvas, producing a dripping transition among shapes. This notion is further explored through “the surrounds,” regions where flesh and physical attributes collide with mass, volume, and entropy forces relentlessly.
As I delve into the artistry of Rouy, I find myself captivated by the intriguing way he manipulates faces, either blurring them or entirely removing them from his works. This creative choice seems to question the dominance of photographic and digital representation, instead spotlighting the body as a dynamic, ever-evolving entity shaped by its relationship with the world at large. The gallery describes Rouy’s pieces as vibrant and distinct, capturing the raw emotions of modern existence – longing and discontent, the yearning to connect that is often thwarted by feelings of isolation – in an era defined by globalization and technological advancement.
Besides “The Bleed, Part II”, Rouy will also introduce the U.S. debut of “BODYSUIT”, a captivating live show by artist Sharon Eyal, taking place in Los Angeles from February 20th to 23rd.
