Georgia Opposition Party launches United Space, a blockchain-based democracy app ahead of elections

As a seasoned analyst with over two decades of experience observing political landscapes, I must admit that the United National Movement’s initiative with the United Space app is nothing short of revolutionary. Coming from a region where democracy has faced its fair share of challenges, I find it incredibly heartening to see a party leveraging technology to strengthen democratic processes.

Ahead of the October 26th parliamentary elections, Georgia’s main opposition group, the United National Movement, introduced a new identity application called United Space, which is operated by Rarimo.

As per an Alexa Blockchain report, the app intends to leverage a blockchain-based system to tackle low voter participation in Georgia by incentivizing citizens for engagement, irrespective of their political leanings. If elected, the party plans to employ this app to digitize the Public Service Hall as a testing ground for Universal Basic Income, with the earnings being redistributed back to the citizens.

Utilizing the zero-knowledge social system Rarimo, the United Space application aims to introduce a liquid democracy framework, empowering users to cast anonymous votes via the app and receive compensation for their active involvement.

United Space is essentially a refined adaptation of the Rarimo ZK proof-of-citizenship solution, known as Freedom Tool. What sets Freedom Tool apart from other blockchain systems is its unique feature that empowers users to create their own identities by securely uploading their national ID information, encrypted, onto a decentralized registry.

The app features a secure voting system, shielded from privacy invasions and fraudulent activities like voter manipulation, thanks to the use of blockchain technology which ensures the integrity of the voting process by preventing any tampering with the polls.

The system ensures that third parties, such as governments, cannot monitor users’ actions within the app. Maintaining this degree of anonymity is particularly important in the present political situation of Georgia.

This year’s election is seeing increased friction due to concerns that Georgia’s democratic system is shifting towards an authoritarian rule, and there are signs of it moving closer to Russia’s dominion again.

To encourage higher voter participation in Georgia, citizens could receive incentives not only for voting but also for participating actively in civic duties. For instance, on the United Space platform, there’s a scheme called “Points and Ownership” that allows users to accumulate points and eventually gain shares at strategic locations.

Giorgi Vashadze, head of the United National Movement, dreams of far-reaching changes within Georgia’s democratic system and beyond, extending to the global community as well.

Vashadze stated that United Space aims to strengthen Georgia’s democracy by making it one of the strongest in the world. This initiative will offer unparalleled privacy, convenience, and accessibility for citizens when interacting not only with the electoral process but also with everyday government services.

As Director at Rarilabs, Kitty Horlick explained, the app empowers citizens to become active participants, enabling them to engage more effectively in the democratic process, overseeing state resources and public services.
