Georgie And Mandy's First Marriage EP Explained Why They Decided Against Bringing Sheldon Back For Thanksgiving Episode

As a longtime fan who has watched both Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory multiple times, I found Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage‘s Thanksgiving episode to be a poignant exploration of loss and family dynamics. The decision not to bring back Sheldon Armitage was a wise one, as it allowed us to delve deeper into the Cooper household post-George Sr.’s death.

❗️Heads up! This text discloses plot points from the ‘Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage’ episode titled “Thanksgiving.” Watch it on Paramount+, but beware of potential spoilers if you proceed! 📺🎉

In their initial marriage storyline, the first holiday-themed episode didn’t exactly radiate happiness. Instead, it focused on Georgie’s persistent attempts to convince his mother and sister to join Thanksgiving dinner despite their reluctance. This underscored the lingering effects of George Sr.’s demise on the series. As hinted in the previews, Sheldon opted out of attending this gathering; however, it was noted that he was initially considered for the episode, as shared by the show’s executive producer during a recent interview.

As a gamer, I’d like to share some insights about a show we both love. Recently, I learned that Steve Holland, one of the creators, discussed the episode with TVLine and explained why Iain Armitage’s character didn’t appear despite the holiday being an ideal time for his return. Despite it seeming fitting for the character to reappear since his father passed on the last Thanksgiving, Holland mentioned that it didn’t align well with the story they were trying to tell in this particular episode.

To begin with, during our conversation about the episode, the question of whether Sheldon should be involved was indeed a topic – something like, “Is Sheldon going to join in?” There are moments when he could potentially reappear, but as we planned out this [episode], it felt like his return would negatively impact the narrative. In many cases, when a matriarch or patriarch passes away, family dynamics can become strained, and that’s what is happening here. Although it would have been enjoyable to see Sheldon again, it seemed unlikely that this family wouldn’t come together for Thanksgiving under any circumstances involving Mary and Sheldon in California. In a way that made “Sheldon-like” sense, he didn’t return, and it served the story we wanted to tell better without him.

Throughout their respective series, it’s been shown that Mary tends to cater more to Young Sheldon and The Big Bang Theory’s Sheldon than her other two children. If she had come home for the holiday, it would have been likely that Mary would have prepared a meal even if she didn’t feel like it. Given that this episode focused on Mary’s sorrow and reluctance to celebrate Thanksgiving following George’s death, having Sheldon appear in the storyline wouldn’t have fit well.

I concur with this choice, primarily because it gave us a deeper insight into the Cooper household dynamics when Georgie, Sheldon, and George weren’t present. Missy’s defiant demeanor underscores her readiness for a standalone series. Her insistence on attending Thanksgiving only if Mandy accompanied her to get a tattoo adds fuel to this belief. Although the tattoo incident was humorously resolved, it could potentially create complications for Mandy in future episodes.

George and Mandi’s first marriage continues a tradition reminiscent of “The Big Bang Theory,” and I can hardly wait for more such developments.

Initially resistant, Mary eventually relented and attended the Thanksgiving celebration at the McAllister residence. However, she departed following a heated disagreement between Audrey and Jim about his alcohol consumption. Georgie pursued her, discovering that the scene triggered memories of an old argument with George Sr. on Thanksgiving, causing Mary to become emotional. The episode concluded with Mary, Georgie, and Missy opting to savor dessert at George Sr.’s gravesite, despite Missy finding it somewhat unsettling.

In the set of “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” crew members have debated the advantages of not featuring Sheldon Cooper. However, it’s unlikely he’ll remain absent forever, especially with Christmas approaching. If the series chooses to address this holiday, it could serve as another chance for him to return. On the other hand, considering their strained relationship due to their father’s incident in “The Big Bang Theory,” it’s possible we won’t see Sheldon again.

On “Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage,” we’ll discover what lies ahead with Sheldon as fresh episodes unfold every Thursday at 8:00 p.m. ET on CBS. For now, let’s savor the journey of Season 1 and stay alert for any unexpected twists that might pop up!
