There’s always uncertainty about which movies will spawn sequels or even entire franchises that last for years. Take the Fast and Furious series, set to release its eleventh installment soon, while also giving birth to spinoffs, amusement park attractions, and potentially television adaptations. Studio executives must stay prepared to capitalize on fan interest when it signals the launch of a successful film. This is exactly what happened with Den of Thieves, a 2018 gritty crime drama about an L.A. county sheriff known as Big Nick (played by Gerard Butler in top form). The movie received mixed reviews and modest box office earnings. However, on streaming platforms, it turned out to be the perfect choice for repeat viewing, offering a thrilling experience.
This week marks the long-awaited cinema release of “Den of Thieves 2: Pantera”, a sequel that finally picks up where we left off, with the action moving away from Los Angeles. True to its word, the movie delivers on the intriguing hint dropped at the end of the first film. Gerard Butler reprises his role as “Big Nick” in the sequel, and he’s partnered once again with O’Shea Jackson’s Donnie Wilson. This time, they’re planning a heist targeting diamond merchants. Given that this seems to be setting up a series, I couldn’t help but wonder who fans would like to see in potential future installments, such as “Den of Thieves 3”. And the answer was immediate:
JACKSON: I’m good as long as O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Gerard Butler are involved, I’m all set. (laughs) But of course, anyone who’s ready to play ball. The decision is largely in the hands of the audience, who have the power to influence studios into making a third one. We need a trilogy! There are plenty of talented action stars out there. I just wanted to mention Idris Elba, no particular reason.
BUTLER: I’ve worked with Idris before and he’s fantastic in any role. He’s not only an exceptional actor but also a truly remarkable person. In life or on screen, you can’t go wrong with Idris Elba.
Gerard Butler is returning to the action-comedy masterpiece directed by Guy Ritchie, titled “RocknRolla,” where performances from Thandie Newton, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, and Toby Kebbell left lasting impressions. Frankly, I’d love to see them all in a potential “Den of Thieves 3.” Additionally, I wouldn’t mind inviting Guy Ritchie to take charge and direct one of these films, but director Christian Gudegast holds the reins on this series tightly.
He was seated next to producer Tucker Tooley, who contributed an idea about incorporating another action star into the project. To my astonishment, Tooley even suggested Idris Elba for the role.
In our discussions, we’ve mentioned numerous actors. However, it’s safe to say that Idris Elba has captured our admiration. Not only have I had the privilege of working with him on a film, but his talent is truly extraordinary. He seems to effortlessly embody the roles he plays, fitting perfectly into any world he’s placed in.
It seems like there have been previous discussions about this topic. After all, Idris Elba is an exceptional actor and a proven leading man, often mentioned when James Bond casting is speculated. Before we move on to Den of Thieves 3, let’s focus on getting audiences for Den of Thieves 2 first. The movie had a promising start with $1.35M in Thursday previews, indicating a good weekend ahead, but the final outcome remains to be seen.
