It’s evident from his energetic portrayal that Detective “Big Nick” O’Brien, played by Gerard Butler in the Den of Thieves films, has emerged as one of Butler’s cherished roles. In Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, both Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. reprise their characters, Detective “Big Nick” O’Brien and master thief Donnie Wilson respectively, following the success of their 2018 action-heist film. The sequel offers several surprising turns as director/writer Christian Gudegast broadens the franchise’s universe and storytelling potential.
During a chat with MovieWeb, Butler mentioned that portraying Big Nick is particularly memorable among his extensive film roles, which include characters from movies like “How to Train Your Dragon”, “Plane”, “Angel Has Fallen”, and others. However, he has one character he cherishes above all others, which remains unrivaled in his affections.
It’s clear, there’s no one quite as remarkable as the character Leonidas from the 2007 movie “300”. Truly, such a portrayal is nothing short of extraordinary.
Butler then went straight into praising Big Nick as his next favorite character who comes to mind:
However, if we’re talking about a person with colorful life experiences, someone who might be erratic yet possesses a profound human spirit; someone who is irrepressible and potentially dangerous, all while navigating the complexities of their world… [Big Nick] is an exciting, enjoyable character to portray.
The steel-like detective character played by Butler proves both intriguing and entertaining to observe. As Butler himself stated about the sequel, “It generates a lot of, I believe, memorable scenes as you progress through the film. We have so many in this, and particularly how [Big Nick] interacts with Donnie Wilson here. Nick wouldn’t exist without Donnie, sadly. Nick might not want to acknowledge it, but Donnie does play a significant role in shaping Nick into who he becomes.
The Action-Packed ‘Den of Thieves’ Moves to Europe
In the upcoming sequel, I’m braced for heightened tension since my adversaries, Nick and Donnie, find themselves unwillingly united. Picking up from where the initial movie ended, our joint escapade promises more thrilling action scenes, breathtaking stunts, and a captivating twist – the complex relationship between Nick and Donnie unfolds further. The European backdrop also heightens the mystery, as we both are compelled to navigate unfamiliar circumstances. Filmmaker Christian Gudegast ensures that the sequel doesn’t disappoint.
In order to create an engaging movie experience, focus on incorporating ample doses of humor, camaraderie, and suspense among the two main characters. Additionally, a fresh, intriguing plotline should be developed. The primary story revolves around these characters reuniting and planning an extravagant heist at the world’s largest diamond exchange, with the ultimate goal of extorting numerous criminals. As Butler put it, the film encapsulates “the entire spectrum of both immense joy and great hardship – as well as everything in between.
Seven years ago, Den of Thieves made its way to cinemas, with viewers quickly captivated by the concept: A clandestine gang called The Outlaws orchestrated a daring heist on Los Angeles’ Federal Reserve. Enter Big Nick, tasked with restoring order. The second installment maintains the same raw and thrilling vibe. Meadow Williams reprises her role as Holly O’Brien, while Jordan Bridges returns as Bob, along with Salvatore Esposito, Orli Shuka, Dino Kelly, Nazmiye Oral, and Rico Verhoeven. Den of Thieves 2: Pantera will be screened in theaters from January 10, distributed by Lionsgate.
