The third installment of “Den of Thieves” is generating anticipation, with its star teasing its release as the second film in the action series hits theaters. Fans, eager to see Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr. reunite after a seven-year gap, appear to have their patience rewarded, as the movie has garnered a higher Tomatometer score than its previous version. Interestingly, Butler hints that fans won’t have to wait too long for the third movie – a revelation that has left his co-star taken aback.
The movie titled “Den of Thieves” came out in January 2018, featuring stars like Butler, Jackson Jr., 50 Cent, Pablo Schreiber, and Evan Jones. This film was a box office success, raking in approximately $80 million globally. Despite receiving a moderate response from critics (41% Tomatometer score), the public appreciated the intense action-thriller. A sequel to the movie was announced shortly after its release, but the production process has been slow and challenging due to various external factors. It appears that Butler himself acknowledges some responsibility for the delay, yet he’s determined to prevent a repeat of this issue in the future.
During an interview with ScreenRant, Butler hinted at something that will delight his fans, albeit causing a bit of perplexity for O’Shea Jackson Jr. Here’s their discussion regarding Den of Thieves 3, as shown below:
[Discuss Den of Thieves 3 interview exchange between Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr.]
Butler: It’s not going to take that long.
Jackson Jr.: Really?
Butler: I will not wait anymore, and I won’t do that to other people anymore. I’m sorry.
Jackson Jr.: Okay.
Butler: It’s not all my fault, but a lot of it is.
Gerard Butler Fought Through Pain for ‘Den of Thieves 2’
Acting in intense action films like Den of Thieves 2 can be physically demanding for any actor, and Butler experienced more hardships than usual during filming his role as Nick O’Brien. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Butler shared that he tore his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the early stages of production for the sequel. This part of the knee helps keep the leg bones in place, and surgery was necessary to correct the injury. Remarkably, Butler finished the film’s grueling action scenes before undergoing the surgery. He stated:
During the initial stages of this film, I found myself in an unusual situation due to having undergone a rather intense operation recently. About a month afterward, I sustained a complete tear in my ACL. As I embarked on this movie, I wasn’t in top form because I hadn’t yet had surgery for the torn ACL. This film was quite physically demanding, and I didn’t have the opportunity to get the necessary surgery, so I ended up making the movie with a freshly torn ACL, which proved to be quite challenging.
It appears that enduring the pain proved beneficial, but Butler’s remark about being a “whiny little complainer” during filming implies it might not have been all worthwhile. Despite this, the film is poised to dethrone Mufasa: The Lion King at the box office this weekend and has garnered more favorable reviews from critics than the initial movie.
Regardless of Butler’s eagerness to start work on Den of Thieves 3 immediately, if production gets the go-ahead, it’s expected that we won’t witness Nick O’Brien embarking on another thrilling escapade for at least a couple of years.
