As a movie critic, I’m thrilled to share that one of the most captivating action projects from an undisclosed studio has finally revealed its release window. Known as “Last Samurai Standing,” this upcoming series takes inspiration from the manga “Ikusagami” by Shogo Imamura and Katsumi Tatsuzawa. The story revolves around 292 warriors who gather at a temple for a fierce battle royale, with a staggering 100-billion-yen prize as the enticing bait. Now, I’ve got exciting news – this exhilarating blend of Squid Game and samurai action is set to debut on our favorite streamer in November 2025.
The upcoming release schedule for Netflix’s international releases has been unveiled, as reported by What’s on Netflix, and among the action-packed projects slated to grace the streaming platform is “Last Samurai Standing.” This series stars Jun’ichi Okada, known for his roles in “From Up on Poppy Hill” and “Tales from Earthsea,” who portrays our hero fighting against the deadly blades of samurai swords in order to protect his wife and child. Directed by Michihito Fujii, who has previously worked on “Shoutai” and “18×2 Beyond Youthful Days,” “Last Samurai Standing” is set to be an exciting addition to Netflix’s lineup. For more details, you can find the official synopsis for the series given below.
In the late 19th century, during the Meiji era, I find myself in Kyoto at the Tenryuji Temple. As twilight falls, 292 formidable warriors assemble, tempted by the allure of a massive reward worth 100 billion yen. Among this dangerous assembly is me, Shujiro Saga (Junichi Okada), who steps into this perilous contest with a single aim: to save my beloved wife and child from their current afflictions.
‘Last Samurai Standing’ Is One of Several Exciting Action Projects Coming to Netflix in 2025
Star Jun’ichi Okada, who is not only part of Last Samurai Standing as a producer and action director, expresses his eagerness to spearhead the action-packed series. He recently shared with Netflix that he can hardly contain his excitement to deliver “action, drama, social commentary, and entertainment” to global viewers, thanks to the streaming platform. We’re equally thrilled to see it unfold.
When Mr. Takahashi from Netflix contacted me while I was still performing in historical dramas, I had already been contemplating ways to elevate this genre beyond Japan’s borders. I recognized its potential for action, drama, social commentary, and entertainment, but felt they could be pushed even further. This led me to discover Imamura’s manga, which held an appealing modern appeal. The thought of adapting it sparked great excitement within me.
In the same vein as films like “Rebel Ridge,” “The Shadow Strays,” and the martial arts saga “Uprising,” this year offers exciting action movies such as Tom Hardy and “The Raid” director Gareth Evans’ long-awaited thriller, “Havoc,” and the highly anticipated comic book action sequel, “The Old Guard 2.” However, before these arrivals, there is the revenge-centered action thriller, “Demon City.” Scheduled to premiere on Netflix on February 27, 2025, “Demon City” brings Masamichi Kawabe’s manga “Oni Goroshi” to life in live-action. The story follows a former renowned assassin who, upon the apparent deaths of his wife and daughter, embarks on a brutal (and indeed very violent) mission for vengeance.
