Regardless of your opinion on Ryan Murphy, it’s clear he’s constantly brainstorming methods to expand and strengthen his television realm. Previously, there were no hints suggesting that the universe of his hit procedural show “9-1-1” and his latest venture, “Doctor Odyssey,” were interconnected. However, this is soon to be disproved as the realms of these two ABC series are on a collision course.
In an exciting turn of events, characters from both “9-1-1” and “Doctor Odyssey” will combine in a special episode of the latter. This unique episode finds Angela Bassett’s character, Athena Grant from “9-1-1”, boarding Joshua Jackson’s Dr. Max Bankman’s cruise ship for Doctor Odyssey. Each episode of Doctor Odyssey explores various themes on a cruise ship, and this crossover will unfold during Casino Week. Here, Bassett’s Athena grows suspicious that two passengers are planning a heist similar to “Ocean’s 11” against the ship’s vault. The official synopsis for this special event can be found below:
With Max by her side, Athena escalates the risk level in a perilous contest. Not all participants will walk away victorious in this high-stakes situation.
The show is scheduled to broadcast on Thursday, March 20, and if this crossover attracts good ratings, it’s possible that more characters from 9-1-1 could appear on Doctor Odyssey. Additionally, some of the crew from Doctor Odyssey might find themselves dealing with a land-based emergency. The combination seems logical since they both air on ABC on Thursday evenings and have shown success in both live and delayed viewership.
‘9-1-1′ and ‘Doctor Odyssey‘ Sound Like a Perfect Match
As a movie connoisseur, let me share my insights on two captivating television series: “9-1-1” and “Doctor Odyssey.” In the former, I find myself drawn to Angela Bassett’s character, Athena Grant, who is not just an LAPD patrol sergeant but also the wife of Robert “Bobby” Nash, portrayed by Peter Krause. Robert is the commanding officer at LAFD Station 118. On the other hand, “Doctor Odyssey” introduces us to Joshua Jackson’s character, Dr. Max Bankman, a fresh recruit on the high-end cruise ship, The Odyssey. Both shows were masterfully crafted by Murphy and share a procedural essence, though “9-1-1,” with its expansive ensemble cast, skillfully weaves serialized situations to maintain viewer engagement.
1-1-9 showcases the personal and work lives of Los Angeles’ first responders such as police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and dispatchers. In contrast, Doctor Odyssey focuses on Dr. Max Bankman’s journey in handling rare medical cases aboard a luxury cruise ship, supported by his skilled team. Both series have an element of drama and are reminiscent of Murphy’s Law, but it’s hard to deny the creator’s understanding of what viewers desire.
Following the broadcast of “9-1-1”, “Doctor Odyssey” has consistently delivered well, attracting an average of 4.2 million viewers and maintaining 86% of “9-1-1’s” 4.9 million viewer average. The upcoming crossover episode should see a boost from the largely overlapping audience. Considering delayed viewing, it’s a consistently strong evening for ABC, which is all a network can hope for in these times of unpredictable network TV viewership.
The 9-1-1 and Doctor Odyssey crossover episode is set to air on Thursday, March 20.
