Ghost Of Yotei – Everything We Know So Far

Ghost Of Yotei - Everything We Know So Far

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades under my belt, I must say that the Ghost of Yotei announcement during the September 24 State of Play was nothing short of exhilarating. The trailer’s reveal of a new protagonist, region, and timeframe within feudal Japan has me eagerly anticipating this new Sucker Punch adventure.

The spirit of Mount Yotei emerged as the highlight during the September 24 State of Play presentation. The trailer unveiled a fresh protagonist, setting, and chronological context within Japan’s feudal era for an exciting journey that gamers will be immersed in through Sucker Punch’s upcoming adventure.

We’ve analyzed the trailer to bring you four things we know about the game so far, which is set to release at some point in 2025 barring any potential delays.

Everything We Know About Ghost of Yotei

From what’s been revealed in the brief three-minute preview, there isn’t a great deal known about the game at present. Yet, it doesn’t leave us entirely in the dark. Here are four aspects you might encounter in this fresh, nostalgic setting of Samurais and their code of honor:

New Eyed Samurai

In the Ghost of Yotei, the main character has been switched to a new protagonist named Atsu. This role is skillfully portrayed by Erika Ishii, a well-known voice actor from the gaming world who’s recognized for her work in games like Destiny (as Ana Bray), Apex Legends (Valkyrie), and Mortal Kombat 1 (Sektor).

Recently, she took the mantle as the player-created Rook in Dragon Age: The Veilguard.

Instead of continuing Jin Sakai’s narrative, SuckerPunch opted for a new beginning in the Ghost of Tsushima series. However, they remain committed to preserving the essential ‘Ghost’ theme that characterizes the franchise.

Atsu will continue her journey in this brand new world…

300 Years Later

300 years following the Tsushima events, the narrative unfolds in the early 1600s – a time marking the conclusion of the Mongol invasion and the onset of the Edo Period. This era is significant as it signifies the beginning of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which was established after the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara, a historic event that history enthusiasts will recognize.

During this era, notable historical figures such as the famed swordsmaster, Miyamoto Musashi, emerged. Moreover, it marked the commencement of Japan’s rich cultural growth, giving birth to forms like Kabuki, Bunraku, and Ukiyo-e art.

While the developers haven’t explicitly confirmed or denied their appearance, it seems reasonable to anticipate possible cameo appearances or Easter eggs featuring these well-known characters.

We Are Not in Tsushima Anymore

It’s worth noting that the island of Tsushima has seen its share of conflicts, but Sucker Punch is leading us towards exploring an entirely different setting.

The game unfolds in the scenic regions encompassing Mount Yotei, a grand and beautiful mountain once called Ezo, now recognized as Hokkaido in Japan.

Ghost Of Yotei - Everything We Know So Far

In a recent post on the PlayStation blog, they highlighted Yotei as a region beyond Japanese jurisdiction, boasting vast fields of grass, icy tundra, and hidden perils that catch you off guard.

This tranquil, verdant locale, distant from the structured samurai groups in Tsushima, seems an ideal setting for embarking on a fresh narrative. The expanse of the world map isn’t definitively known yet, but it’s reasonable to presume that it will encompass the entire region.

PlayStation 5 Pro Enhanced

Built specifically for the PlayStation 5, Ghost of Yotei will not be available on PlayStation 4 or PC systems at launch, potentially disappointing those who were eager to play it on these platforms.

Ghost Of Yotei - Everything We Know So Far

Given the unveiling of the PlayStation 5 Pro, it’s reasonable to expect that Ghost of Yotei will benefit from the improved graphical features that the console offers as well.

According to Andrew Goldfarb, Senior Communications Manager at Sucker Punch, there are expansive vistas that allow you to gaze far into the surroundings, offering sights of fresh skies adorned with shimmering stars and auroras, as well as more convincing wind-induced movements in grass and plants. He also hints at additional enhancements we’ll learn about later on.

He also mentioned that our fresh environment offers us a chance to unveil novel mechanics, enhance gameplay, and even develop new weaponry.

With this fresh sequel, there’s plenty to be excited about! The teaser trailer offered just a peek into the upcoming chapters of the series, and we’re eagerly anticipating further revelations. Expected to drop on PlayStation 5 systems next year is Ghost of Yotei.
