As a dedicated fan of the supernatural sitcom “Ghosts”, I must say that the introduction of Patience, the Puritan ghost, has been a breath of fresh (or should I say, musty?) air. Having watched her character evolve throughout the seasons, it’s fascinating to delve into her backstory and ponder what she’s been up to for centuries buried in the dirt.
As I eagerly awaited the start of Ghosts‘ Season 4 on the 2024 TV lineup, I found myself pondering over Patience, the Puritan ghost trapped in the ground. Mostly, I’ve been intrigued about what she’s been doing for hundreds of years while being stuck there. However, the show hasn’t delved deeply into that mystery yet. But luckily, I managed to pose that question to Mary Holland, the actress who portrays the ghost.
In a chat with TopMob, I delved into the past and lore of the character Patience, focusing on her adventures since parting ways from the spirits in the dirt long ago. Mary Holland, the actress playing her, revealed that Patience was incredibly devoted during her lifetime, and this devotion continues even in death.
She was expelled from this Puritan settlement due to her harshness and critical nature. Swearing to establish her own community, I believe she followed through with that plan. In death, when she’s in the ground, I suspect she continues much of what she did in life – caring for the earth, perhaps striving to create a home and a living there.
After Patience abducted Isaac, we were given a glimpse into what appeared to be her living quarters since he was led underground. In other words, we’ve had a peek at how she has been managing the soil in a sense. Furthermore, it is evident that she hasn’t ventured out of the earth for quite some time because she clearly doesn’t fit into the lifestyle of the manor – a fact I emphasize greatly.
To clarify, Holland explained her belief about what Patience might have been doing while underground. She suggested that it may not be too dissimilar to how Patience used to live when she was still among us.
In my opinion, she seems to follow the same routines as before, including prayer, as she adheres strongly to her beliefs. This suggests that in her mind, there may not have been a clear distinction between living and dying.
In our recent viewing, the latest character in the Ghosts series stands out as the most rigid and traditional. She’s deeply religious, ostracized by her community, and tends to be quite critical. This explains why she chose to stay in the muck; it seems she found a place where she could live according to her own beliefs.
On the other hand, it’s incredibly entertaining to watch her completely outside of her comfort zone as she discovers the contemporary world, since she’s figuratively no longer six feet underground.
I can hardly wait to see her reaction when the special Halloween episode of “Ghosts” airs on CBS tomorrow, October 31st, at 8:30 pm Eastern Time. If you prefer to watch it later, you can stream it with a Paramount+ subscription the day after.
