Giancarlo Esposito Opens Up About Taking Over Andre Braugher’s Role in ‘The Residence’

Giancarlo Esposito discusses paying tribute to Andre Braugher’s legacy as he assumes the role of A.B. Wynter in Netflix’s “The Residence.” Braugher had been cast for a crucial part, portraying the White House Chief Usher, and had filmed four out of eight episodes before his unfortunate passing due to lung cancer in December 2023. The production team ultimately chose to recast the role and re-shoot Braugher’s scenes, with Esposito being selected to take over from Braugher. However, Esposito confides that it was not a simple choice to make.

Discussing with AP News during the latest screening of “The Residence”, Esposito opened up about the challenging choice to replace Braugher in the mystery series. He elaborated on his intention to pay tribute to him by portraying the character, and further discussed their long-standing relationship in the acting world. Notably, this bond strengthened when Esposito joined “Homicide: Life on the Street” after Braugher’s departure from the NBC drama, followed by their shared appearance in the show’s TV movie sequel, “Homicide: The Movie”.
