Giancarlo Esposito Reveals ‘One Request’ In Playing Moff Gideon, And He Was So Right

As a longtime fan of both Giancarlo Esposito and the Star Wars franchise, I have to say that the actor’s portrayal of Moff Gideon in The Mandalorian has been nothing short of brilliant. His creative input into the character, particularly his request for a cape, added an extra layer of depth and menace to Moff Gideon that I find absolutely captivating.

Giancarlo Esposito’s Moff Gideon has been a standout in the popular Disney+ series, The Mandalorian. Remarkably, the actor was granted significant autonomy in crafting his character, which ultimately led him to make an essential request of creators Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni. I must admit, it was indeed a brilliant idea on his part to ask for that particular creative touch.

At the Los Angeles Comic Con (as shared by People), Giancarlo Esposito disclosed that when he initially joined the first Star Wars series on Disney+, Filoni and Favreau were quite secretive about the show, leaving him with limited guidance for his character. To compensate, Esposito conducted independent research, leading to one specific request regarding Moff Gideon’s attire. The actor explained…

The one request I asked for was a cape, and that gave me the feeling that I had to walk a certain way and be a certain way.

It’s clear that everyone can appreciate this choice as outstanding. Wearing a cape undeniably makes one appear and feel more grandiose in real life. Giancarlo Esposito grasped this fact quite well. He understood that the cape would influence his on-screen presence, and that was precisely the effect he aimed for.

Moff Gideon is one of the remaining symbols of the ancient Empire, once a significant figure who now seems out of place in a rapidly changing universe. Despite this, he maintains an air of importance and is committed to restoring a time when the Empire was dominant, with him at its core. That’s all evident in the way he carries himself and his choice of attire.

Actor from “Boys” admits he revisited various Star Wars characters to fuel his own inspiration. More specifically, he focused on Peter Cushing, known for his role as the initial Grand Moff character, and of course, Darth Vader. It was likely the manner in which Vader moved with a cape that influenced the appearance of Moff Gideon, as explained by Esposito further.

After revisiting the scenes, I found myself captivated by Peter Cushing’s portrayal, particularly his Grand Moff character which intrigued me greatly. I also spent some time studying James Earl Jones, as he served as an inspiration to me – the way he moved, the elegance he exuded even beneath that grand and graceful costume. It wasn’t until much later that I began to realize the similarities between him and a contemporary version of Darth Vader within myself.

It’s widely recognized that David Prowse, the man under the Darth Vader costume, significantly influenced Giancarlo Esposito’s portrayal of Moff Gideon, not necessarily through direct credit but more so through his powerful on-screen presence. While James Earl Jones’ voice would undoubtedly enhance the character’s aura of power, it’s the mannerisms and demeanor of the actor inside the costume that seemed to have inspired Esposito the most.

It’s uncertain if Moff Gideon will reappear in The Mandalorian. Although he seemed to perish at the end of Mando Season 3, his past attempt to clone himself and his expressed eagerness to resume the character suggest a possibility for his return. Fingers crossed that we’ll witness the School Daze actor donning the cape once more in the upcoming Mandalorian and Grogu film set for release next year.

Watch Giancarlo Esposito’s portrayal of Moff Gideon across all three seasons of “The Mandalorian” by subscribing to Disney+ for streaming. With the Star Wars franchise wrapping up, he has another exciting role lined up as he’ll appear in the upcoming Marvel film “Captain America: Brave New World”, set to release early next year.
