Gilmore Girls’ Lauren Graham Reveals The Storyline She Wasn’t A Fan Of, And I’m Right There With Her

This year marks the 25th anniversary for the beloved series “Gilmore Girls,” and it continues to be a fan favorite on Netflix. The quaint fictional town of Stars Hollow serves as an ideal setting for the everyday struggles faced by Lorelai and Rory Gilmore, with their strong bond as mother-daughter friends captivating viewers. However, there’s one plotline from the show’s 7-season run that even actress Lauren Graham isn’t fond of – a sentiment I wholeheartedly share.

Over the span of its run, the television series “Gilmore Girls” touched upon themes such as disapproving parents, being a single mom, typical adolescent struggles, falling in love and heartbreak. On the “Call Her Daddy” podcast, the actress from “Parenthood” shared that one storyline didn’t sit well with her, and it revolved around an argument she had with her on-screen daughter.

In one particular year, there was an argument between Alexis Bledel and myself. Rory Gilmore and Lorelai Gilmore had their own disagreement that lasted quite some time, which we often discussed. Amy Sherman-Palladino remarked, ‘It’s impossible to sustain a show for this length without introducing conflict.’ I can’t recall the specifics of the conflict, but it persisted for quite a while, and it was one that viewers seemed to dislike the most.

In the Season 5 finale, Rory’s dilemma arises when she chooses to leave Yale following Mitchum Huntzberger’s criticism that she lacks the ability to achieve her aspirations. Moreover, a night of recklessness with her boyfriend lands her in legal trouble, further complicating matters. Unable to bear the thought of Rory squandering her life, Lorelai decides to sever their relationship financially.

It’s astonishing that Lauren Graham can’t recall what caused the heated disagreement. For nearly an entire season, the on-screen mother and daughter found themselves living apart without any contact. This prolonged estrangement lasted for several months in the show, during which significant events like Luke and Lorelai’s engagement and Rory’s 21st birthday occurred, milestones that passed while they were apart.

I must admit, it’s incredibly affirming to hear the actress from Parenthood voice that opinion aloud. To me, much of the sixth season of Gilmore Girls felt like a challenging period, which is why I call it the “Grim Epoch” of Gilmore Girls – it was quite a struggle for me to make my way through those episodes.

Being a fan of “Gilmore Girls” who discovered it later in life, I devoured all episodes during my high school years with my Netflix subscription. I swiftly made my way through the early seasons, reaching up to where we currently are in the series. While I appreciate Amy Sherman-Palladino’s ambition with this particular storyline, it didn’t quite hit the mark for me, and I believe I understand why.

In the sixth season of Gilmore Girls, when Jess, Rory’s former boyfriend, dines with Rory and Logan, his insightful remarks make him stand out among Rory’s love interests. This memorable scene is one reason I consider him my top pick, as he seems to have articulated thoughts that many viewers might have had.

In my opinion, throughout the plot, Rory’s behavior seemed inconsistent with her usual self, which was likely the primary factor contributing to its lack of appeal among fans. Watching her act recklessly was tough for many viewers. Frankly, I can understand why Lorelai reacted frostily towards Rory under those circumstances. In fact, during their disagreements, I frequently found myself sympathizing with Lorelai more than Rory. Typically, the arguments were due to questionable choices made by Rory that didn’t align with her moral compass, such as becoming Dean’s mistress, which is certainly a difficult situation to support.

In summary, it was disheartening to see those actions causing a rift between the Gilmore girls. Their unique, quick-witted banter and warm interactions are what resonated with viewers, making their relationship so endearing.

Fortunately, after some time, the pair reconciled, allowing the series to continue, and it even experienced a revival. Co-creator Amy Sherman-Palladino has hinted that she would be open to further episodes of Gilmore Girls, and Lorelai herself expressed that the 4-part revival didn’t seem like the conclusion of their tale. The original set remains intact, suggesting a potential return if given the go-ahead. I will eagerly watch as long as the Gilmore girls remain united.
