Giona Bierens de Haan’s Thorny Furniture Is Inspired by a Tropical Tree

The Geneva-based company, Giona Bierens de Haan, has presented its new furniture line called “CEIBA”, which draws inspiration from the distinctive thorns of a South American tree. This debut was held in conjunction with an initial showcase at Topic gallery. To complement this exhibition, Giona Bierens de Haan collaborated with Swiss-Argentinian ceramist Angeles Rodriguez on a collection of pottery inspired by similar organic patterns.

In a recent Instagram post, the company described their new series as capturing “the unexpected shapes seen in nature, with a dash of whimsical exaggeration.” The collection takes its name from the Ceiba tree, renowned for its distinctive thorns throughout South America. The designs are crafted using contrasting shades of oak and bold solid green, which brings out the fun-loving spirit in the otherwise standard shapes.

The arrangement features both vertical and horizontal shelves, connected by four chairs and a table, giving off an appearance similar to a prickly shrub when put together. This assembly is known as SOMBRA, where Angeles Rodriguez’s ceramics are crafted from dark sandstone fragments and adorned with sharp protrusions much like the CEIBA pieces.

Giona Bierens de Haan’s personal home collection diverges from the usual scope of his firm, which mainly concentrates on architectural designs and sculptural arrangements. Yet, it mirrors a growing trend among design studios expanding into furniture and interior decoration. Notably, this unique collectible design catches the eye of the emerging generation of aficionados who seek to differentiate themselves from the prevalence of mass-produced furniture.
