As a movie enthusiast with a soft spot for music biopics that delve deep into the lives of artists, I found “Girl You Know It’s True” to be a captivating ride through the ’80s and the high-stakes world of pop music. Director Simon Verhoeven masterfully captured the era’s mood and the drama surrounding Milli Vanilli, with a special focus on the characters of Pilatus, Morvan, and their enigmatic mentor, Frank Farian, portrayed brilliantly by Matthias Schweighöfer.
Fame, fortune, Grammys, MTV glory. The pop duo Milli Vanilli had it all by the end of 1989. It disappeared by the end of the following year. The rise and fall of the hit group responsible for earworm chart-toppers like “Girl You Know It’s True,” “Blame it on the Rain,” and “Baby Don’t Forget My Number” makes for a compelling topic in the new film from writer/director Simon Verhoeven (Welcome to Germany), Girl You Know It’s True. The film emits a similar vibe to other successful music biopics like Rocketman, Bohemian Rhapsody, and even Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis. It’s easy to follow, the plot moves quickly, the characters are compelling, and there’s enough drama to keep you glued to the screen.
The Rise & Fall of Milli Vanilli
The drama in this case lies in the innocent, heartfelt wonder of the film’s main characters, Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan (Tijan Njie and Elan Ben Ali). Pilatus hailed from Munich, Morvan from Paris. They initially turned heads as dancers in the Munich club scene, and, young as they were at the time, exhibited a sense of doe-eyed fascination when hit record producer Frank Farian found them. Farian was riding a wave of success, coming off big hits with Boney M, whose “Rasputin” is seeing another resurgence, in fact.
In my opinion, as a movie reviewer, it’s no wonder that this dynamic duo, initially known as Top Deck but later famously recognized by another name, agreed to most of Farian’s suggestions. Primarily, they chose to mimic the lyrics without actually singing the cover version of “Girl You Know It’s True” from an obscure Baltimore band called Numarx. They went on to create more songs and videos in this manner. Unfortunately, their decision not to sing a single original word came back to haunt them eventually.
In this film and as time clearly shows, the Milli Vanilli pair experienced a crash in 1990. During a live MTV tour, they were prohibited by someone named Farian from performing. A track malfunctioned, revealing that they had been miming their songs. They managed to ride out the initial uproar, but later, Farian exposed them without informing them of his intentions.
One Star Truly Shines Bright
Director Simon Verhoeven skillfully portrays the atmosphere of the time and the intense drama at play. He also earns praise for focusing on the characters of Pilatus and Morvan, enabling them to tell their own story, thereby reclaiming control over their narrative. At first, this approach might raise some red flags. However, in this case, the narrative method works effectively as it reveals a hidden aspect of these two individuals that we had overlooked. Scandals often have that effect – they can erode a person’s essence. Nevertheless, Verhoeven aims to depict these men as young, ambitious individuals who rose from humble beginnings, getting caught up in the powerful machinery of the music industry.
Although Tijan Njie and Elan Ben Ali convincingly portray nearly every aspect of the original duo exceptionally well, it’s crucial to acknowledge that Matthias Schweighöfer plays a pivotal role in making this film as captivating as it is. The star of Oppenheimer and Army of Thieves seamlessly transforms into Frank Farian, a complex character who exhibits both genius and madness. Schweighöfer managed to authentically portray the struggles of this tormented artist after meeting with Farian via Zoom before his passing in January 2024. The trio consisting of Farian, Pilatus, and Morvan works remarkably well together. Furthermore, the character of Ingrid “Milli” Segieth (portrayed by Bella Dayne) is another appealing aspect. Interestingly, the group owes their nickname to Farian’s devoted assistant.
A Worthy Music Biopic
If you’re a fan of music biopics that take you on an exhilarating journey, then “Girl You Know It’s True” is a movie you won’t want to miss. With its high-quality production, fast-paced narrative, skillful editing, and depictions of the entertainment industry – concerts, studios, lavish hotel rooms, for instance – this film from the 1980s will captivate you. The entire cast delivers strong performances as well, making this a movie that easily wins your favor.
As a dedicated fan, I must admit that sometimes it subtly sways, immersing me so deeply in its narrative and storytelling style. If you remember the atmosphere of ’80s videos with their unique, self-aware charm, then you’ll understand what I mean – it feels like these stories were crafted just for me. Yet, timeless themes such as aspirations for greatness, temptation, failure, and unbreakable friendships are cleverly woven throughout this tale, keeping us all hooked.
The Film’s Hidden (TikTok) Mic Drop
In the wake of the scandal that rocked our world, Robert Pilatus and Fabrice Morvan found themselves left behind by the industry. On the other hand, Farian seemed to weather the storm quite well. Sadly, Pilatus passed away due to an accidental drug overdose in 1998, at just 33 years old. The bittersweet irony? Here we are today, living above the bright screens of TikTok, image-focused Instagram, and reality television. It seems that everyone aspires to be a star – even run for President! In many ways, our society has come to embrace the concept that fake is the new real. This movie provides some insight into how this stunning cultural shift began.
Is it plausible that Milli Vanilli, in light of recent events, has become more pertinent than ever? The global scene seems eerily reminiscent of mini Milli Vanillis. Interestingly, Fabrice Morvan is said to be working on remixes of some classic group tracks. Keep an eye out for those! In the interim, “Girl You Know It’s True” offers a delightful throwback – it’s catchy, intriguing, and provides a comforting sense of nostalgia. It perfectly encapsulates cultural relevance while offering a taste of their tunes (some of which may linger in your mind for quite some time).
