I must confess, it feels like I’ve been transported to the Dickensian era of television with Netflix’s unpredictable rollercoaster ride of saving and canceling shows. One moment they’re our saviors, the next they’re the Grim Reaper. The latest casualty, alas, is none other than the delightful musical comedy, Girls5Eva.
Netflix is rapidly earning the title of the Charles Dickens of the streaming industry, offering the best of scenarios by rescuing popular shows from cancellation on other platforms, only to plunge into the worst scenarios with its frequent cancellations – sometimes for the same show. This unfortunate fate has befallen the latest series, , which will not see a fourth season.
As a devoted fan, I’ve been thrilled to see shows like Lucifer and Manifest find a home at Netflix, even when their original network decided against renewal. This year, the musical comedy Girls5Eva was one of those lucky shows, returning for its third season in March. It was a fantastic moment for fans, reassuring us that the future of this series seemed secure for a couple more seasons. Unfortunately, the Tina Fey-produced show won’t be back for Season 4, a fact that star Busy Philipps called “heartbreaking” on Instagram. In her post, she expressed how difficult it was to say goodbye to this wonderful series.
2024 has undeniably been a challenging year for me, with some moments more difficult than others. However, I am deeply appreciative of the amazing TV show “5eva” and the girls who have become my sisters, as well as Netflix for allowing us to perform together a little longer. I also want to express gratitude to everyone at Universal and Peacock who supported our show so passionately. The brilliance of Meredith, Jeff, Eric, and my guardian angel Tina Fey cannot be overstated. This show has been an integral part of my life, bringing me immense joy even in the darkest times. I truly cherish what I do, and at times it feels almost overwhelming. Isn’t that just how it goes with everything wonderful in life? Keep shining, 5eva!
What is ‘Girls5Eva’ about?
As a film enthusiast, I found myself captivated by the show “Girls5Eva”. In this series, I see myself as one of the former members of a ’90s girl group who’ve reunited, thanks to a rapper sampling one of our old hits. The comedy premise might seem familiar, with Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman exploring similar grounds in their post-“Deadpool & Wolverine” collaboration, “Boy Band”. However, what sets “Girls5Eva” apart is its ability to breathe new life into an old tale, demonstrating that even well-worn stories can still be remarkably vibrant and engaging.
The show was highly praised when it first aired, with a 97% Tomatometer score and an 85% Popcornmeter rating. However, the cancellation is particularly disappointing when you look at the ratings for each season individually. While the series performed well on Peacock, its third season stood out as exceptional, earning a perfect 100% from critics and a record-breaking 90% audience approval. Unfortunately, the show about a once-popular girl group attempting a comeback seems to have mirrored the series’ own trajectory – rescued for a one-off revival on Netflix only to be canceled again shortly afterward.
For individuals unfamiliar with “Girls5Eva”, you can catch the first two seasons on Peacock, while all three seasons are available for streaming on Netflix.
