The head of the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), both its president and CEO, has fired a salvo against the freshly inaugurated Trump administration and the tech magnates who back it.
As an enthusiast, I found myself listening intently to Sarah Kate Ellis’s insightful remarks at the World Economic Forum panel in Davos, Switzerland, held last Thursday. She delved into the interesting connections between Donald Trump and tech titans like Elon Musk, the founder of X, and Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Meta. Remarkably, these two visionaries were seated prominently for President Trump’s inauguration just a few days prior on Monday.
During Trump’s first term in office, approximately 280 actions were taken against our community, and during his recent campaign, he invested more than $280 million on advertisements aimed at the transgender community, Ellis explained to the panelists Ben Fajzullin, Frida Daniela Ruiz, Alexander Cheng, Jin Xing, and Jean Daniel LaRock. “That’s a substantial amount of money that could be put to better use,” Ellis emphasized. “That is a considerable sum of money.
Elon Musk, a South African national appointed by Trump to oversee a new ‘government efficiency’ department, was at the heart of that money,” Ellis went on. She commented, “It seems like the wealthiest 1% are amassing power and wealth, and these billionaires are intentionally focusing on the most vulnerable populations worldwide.” Ellis suggested this focus is merely a distraction and urged everyone to pay attention to the true actions of media tycoons.
As these entities continue to scrutinize and critique us, they’re accumulating wealth and increasing their influence. Notably, a GLAAD study revealed that approximately 100 million Americans are exposed to right-wing media each week. In contrast, progressive media only manages to reach around 30 million people weekly, according to Ellis.
She stated, “There’s a significant difference of 70 million people that I believe is crucial in our current predicament. The focus seems to have shifted towards ideological discussions. However, simply living as part of the LGBTQ+ community should not be considered an act of creating ideology, but merely existing.
On the very first day in office on Monday, Trump pledged to reverse numerous policies advocated by Joe Biden, particularly those promoting the rights of the LGBTQIA+ community. One of his executive orders mandates that the U.S. government will only acknowledge two genders, male and female, and will officially use the term “sex” instead of “gender”.
Additionally, he stipulated that official identity documents from the government, such as passports and visas, should reflect an individual’s inherent, unchangeable biological gender classification, whether male or female.
