Gladiator 2 CGI Does What Was Impossible in Ridley Scott's Original Film

As a seasoned film critic with over three decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Ridley Scott has truly outdone himself with the upcoming sequel to his iconic film, Gladiator II. The original movie was already a visual feast, but Scott’s ambitions for even more breathtaking action sequences were previously limited by the technology of the ’90s.

In the film titled “Gladiator”, Maximus Decimus Meridius, played by Russell Crowe, faced off against formidable opponents including seasoned warriors and live creatures. The initial movie was renowned for its exhilarating action scenes involving chariots, tigers, and muscular gladiators. However, Ridley Scott desired even more. Fortunately, he was granted another chance with “Gladiator II”, set many years after the first installment. This sequel not only advances Maximus’ lineage through his son Lucius (Paul Mescal), but also provides Scott with the chance to realize his original visions with advanced CGI technology.

In an interview with GamesRadar+, director Ridley Scott shared his enthusiasm for expanding the world of Gladiator and ramping up the action sequences in the upcoming film, Gladiator II. Although the combat scenes in the original Gladiator were impressive, Scott plans to take things a step further in the sequel. When asked about the new movie’s action elements, Scott said, “I’ve got a troop of 12 baboons who are carnivorous. Believe me, they’re not just for show.” The initial trailers hint at Lucius’ battles within the Colosseum, where he will confront a gladiator riding a rhinoceros, a pack of apes, and even sharks in a flooded Colosseum.

In the ’90s, when Ridley Scott was working on the original Gladiator, he held grand visions for the film. However, due to the constraints of technology during that era, Scott had to tone down his ambitions. Fast forward to today, advancements in visual effects (VFX) technology have exploded over the past two and a half decades, giving Scott the freedom to create breathtaking action sequences for Gladiator II as producer Douglas Wick stated.

“In our initial project, we were unable to incorporate a real rhinoceros. However, Computer-Generated Imagery (CG) made it possible for us to achieve this in the subsequent film. I recall discussing this idea with trainers due to the high cost of using CG alone, and they mentioned that once a rhino is set in motion, there’s no stopping it.”

Paul Mescal Got in Sporting Shape for Gladiator II’s Action Scenes

Prior to donning the starring armor in “Gladiator II”, Paul Mescal was primarily recognized for his emotionally stirring performances in series and films such as “Normal People” and “Aftersun”. However captivating those roles might have been, it’s fair to assume they wouldn’t have stood a chance against the challenges of the Colosseum. Consequently, to embody Lucius in “Gladiator II”, Mescal knew he needed to build up his physique significantly. Yet, he was determined to create a realistic and athletic figure, avoiding the muscular, pro-bodybuilder or stereotypical ‘sex symbol’ look.

To ready himself for “Gladiator II”, Paul Mescal chose his childhood favorite sport to build up his fighting prowess. As a youngster, he played Gaelic Football – a mix of soccer and rugby – and during his preparation for the movie, he tapped into the sport’s physicality. His workouts focused on developing an athlete’s endurance, mirroring the stamina needed to survive in the Colosseum. Unlike many actors who rapidly bulk up to portray superheroes, Mescal’s transformation for “Gladiator II” bucks the trend and provides a novel perspective on masculinity and strength in action films.
