His calm demeanor and powerful presence on screen are captivating, making him the undisputed star of this film.
Preparing for another round in the grand arena, just as it was in the year 2000 with the original “Gladiator”, the sequel titled “Gladiator II” is all set to dominate the box office. This epic historical action movie continues the saga of Maximus Meridius, portrayed by Russel Crowe, as it delves into a story of revenge and legacy, with Maximus’ son taking up arms in an attempt to dethrone the emperors of Rome. After a wait of two decades for the planets to align, the sequel finds Denzel Washington and Pedro Pascal reuniting on screen for yet another tale of chaos and vengeance: “The Equalizer 2“.
In “The Equalizer 2”, Denzel Washington plays Robert McCall, a retired military operative turned self-appointed avenger. A man of principles with an uncanny knack for aggression, Robert has settled into a low-key existence safeguarding his neighborhood. Following the murder of his friend and ex-colleague, Robert reaches out to Dave (Pascal), Susan’s last known associate before her demise. As Dave’s interrogation uncovers the bitter deception and a clandestine network of assassins, Robert confronts his former ally and the dangerous cabal endangering those he cherishes.

Similar to the first Equalizer movie, The Equalizer 2 portrays Washington as a ruthlessly efficient instrument of vengeance. As Robert takes on the role of justice, he is an intriguing character. The action sequences are thrilling, and McCall’s polished execution of retribution sends shivers down the spine in a satisfying manner. Pedro Pascal delivers a compelling villain, appearing ordinary yet irredeemably corrupt. His character muses that there are no good or bad people, only unfortunates, as his villainous nature unfolds. His backstory as a soldier trained to kill and then abandoned is somewhat pitiful. However, this empathy quickly dissipates in the face of his depravity, further solidifying him as a menacing adversary to the righteous McCall.
The movie received mostly positive feedback from viewers. On Rotten Tomatoes, it garnered an audience score of 61%, while on Metacritic, it scored 6.6 out of 10. Although some viewers felt that the sequel didn’t match up to the original film, they still considered it a solid addition to the series and the revenge action genre. The action sequences were well-received, and Washington’s character was praised for its dramatic depth. However, some critics found the storyline too tragic and fragmented, but Washington’s performance was commended for keeping the movie coherent.

Regardless, the movie, “The Equalizer 2,” was deemed a hit. Produced with a budget of $62 million, it raked in an impressive $102 million within the U.S. and a staggering $190 million globally. A sequel titled “The Equalizer 3” was released in 2023, and the franchise inspired the CBS TV series “The Equalizer,” featuring Queen Latifah as the lead.
In addition to Denzel Washington, The Equalizer 2 features actors like Bill Pullman (known for Casper and While You Were Sleeping), Ashton Sanders (famous for Judas and the Black Messiah), and Melissa Leo (renowned from All My Children). This movie is rated R. Currently, The Equalizer 2 can be streamed on Hulu. Washington and Pascal reunite in Gladiator II, set to hit theaters on November 22.
