Glen Powell Celebrates Wrap of ‘The Running Man’ with Exciting BTS Image!

The news surfaced approximately a year ago (in April 2024) that actor Glen Powell, known for his roles in Top Gun: Maverick and Anyone but You, was chosen to play Ben Richards in the upcoming revamp of the 1987 film, The Running Man. Powell will step into the running shoes originally worn by the protagonist in the original movie, played by Arnold Schwarzenegger, with fans not having long to wait before witnessing Powell’s portrayal of Stephen King’s character. On social media, Powell announced that filming had been completed, and he posted a picture alongside director Edgar Wright to mark the milestone. In his Instagram post, Powell wrote:

I’ve just wrapped up on ‘The Running Man.’ A huge shout-out to our phenomenal team – cast and crew – who have put in countless hours making this happen. I can hardly wait for everyone to witness the fruits of our labor… More exciting moments ahead!

The screenplay for “The Running Man” was jointly penned by Wright and Michael Bacall. However, the upcoming movie is said to be more closely adapted from King’s original novel of the same title, which was written under his pseudonym, Richard Bachman, and published in 1982. Moreover, Josh Powell, known for playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s formidable villain, Thanos, is set to embody the cunning adversary, Killian, in this new adaptation of “The Running Man”.

Indeed, the captivating character Dan Killian, previously portrayed by the late Richard Dawson, is now skillfully brought to life by the Oscar-nominated actor Josh Brolin. Wright emphasized the importance of casting in his modern adaptation of the 1987 movie “Running Man,” and he gathered a talented ensemble to work alongside Powell and Brolin, including Katy O’Brian, William H. Macy, Colman Domingo, and Michael Cera.

‘The Running Man’ Director Teases His Reimagining Is More Like a “Road Movie”

Edgar Wright’s remake of “The Running Man” faces significant expectations due to the fact that the 1987 version, starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, is often cited as one of his finest films. However, it’s important to note that

In simpler terms, the remake of “The Running Man” didn’t do too well financially at the box office ($38.1 million). However, Shawn Levy’s adaptation of Stephen King’s work won’t follow in the footsteps of Paul Michael Glaser’s 1980s version (as seen in “Starsky & Hutch”). Instead, you can anticipate a more “road trip”-like atmosphere from the 2025 version. In an interview with Empire magazine earlier this March, Shawn Levy mentioned that this would be the case.

What I found captivating about the book was how Ben Richards was navigating his solitary journey, making it feel like an extremely perilous game of hide-and-seek. The narrative structure seemed reminiscent of a road trip movie, but with a dangerous and intense twist. As he traverses various landscapes and encounters diverse individuals, Ben’s struggle to survive for 30 days in the wilderness adds a thrilling element.

Starting November 7th, Edgar Wright’s much-awaited adaptation of “The Running Man” hits theaters. But before Glen Powell steps into Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic role as Ben Richards on screen, fans can revisit the oppressive society depicted in the original 1987 film on AMC+ and Philo. At present, you can also watch “The Running Man” on various Video On Demand (VOD) platforms for purchase or rental. This often overlooked Schwarzenegger film is definitely a must-watch.
