Glen Powell Says The Running Man Remake Has 'A Lot of Fun Edgar Wright Flavor'

As a long-time admirer of Hollywood and its mesmerizing world, I must say that the meteoric rise of Glen Powell has left me utterly astounded. It’s as if he’s been catapulted onto our screens from the very pages of a screenwriter’s dream journal!

Hollywood megastar Glen Powell is no stranger to reboots, remakes, and sequels. Having just come off the hugely successful summer blockbuster Twisters, he seemed to have come out of nowhere in 2022 thanks to Top Gun: Maverick, despite being in the business for nearly 20 years up to that point. Now, Powell is teasing his next project, Edgar Wright’s The Running Man, calling it an amalgamation of Stephen King’s classic novel and the offbeat style of Wright.

“For quite some time now, I’ve been focusing a great deal on sprint training. To be honest, that’s about the extent of what I can share at this moment. I’ve been putting in the work to improve my sprinting skills, and it’s given me a good laugh along the way!”

For a long time, Edgar Wright has been one of my most admired filmmakers. Ever since Shaun of the Dead, I’ve been eagerly anticipating collaborating with him. His work never ceases to amaze me, it seems like only his mind could have dreamed up such exceptional pieces.

“I’m absolutely thrilled about ‘The Running Man’ project we’re working on! We’re not just adapting the Stephen King novel, but infusing it with the unique, entertaining flair that only Edgar Wright can provide. It’s been an incredible journey so far, and I can’t wait for everyone to see the results – it promises to be a real blast!”

In previous statements, both Wright and Powell have expressed that their upcoming adaptation of “The Running Man” will be truer to the original source material compared to the 1987 Schwarzenegger film. Although it did manage to convey some fundamental elements, it fell significantly short of King’s initial story. The author has grown distant from the movie due to its lack of accurately portraying his vision. Will we finally receive the gritty, dystopian thriller we’ve been waiting for? It’s possible, but with Powell hinting at Wright incorporating his unique touch, that could mean various outcomes. Here’s hoping that the director of “Shaun of the Dead” doesn’t push it too far in this adaptation.

Glen Powell Is Everywhere These Days

Beyond films like “Maverick” and “Twister,” I must acknowledge that Powell has undeniably established himself as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after leading men. This is largely due to his stellar performances in recent hits such as the romantic comedies “Anyone But You” and “Hit Man.” These films have given me, and many others, a glimpse into his extraordinary versatility. Not to mention, he’s also slated to appear in the upcoming black comedy “Huntington,” alongside Margaret Qualley and the legendary Ed Harris.

Reports indicate that Powell may take up the lead role in a modern adaptation of Kurt Russell’s 1991 firefighter movie “Backdraft.” Although this hasn’t been formally confirmed, producer Brian Grazer hinted at Powell’s involvement earlier this year, mentioning that Imagine Entertainment has already signed him for the project. However, we are still waiting for an official announcement on this matter.

Regardless, Powell is undoubtedly capitalizing on his recent fame by picking enjoyable projects that also showcase his talents more effectively. The possibilities are endless for him right now, and at just 35 years old, there’s still plenty of time left in his career.
