As a long-time fan of both Kevin Costner and the gripping world of Yellowstone, I must say that Dave Annable has truly left a lasting impression with his portrayal of Lee Dutton. Despite his brief stint on the show, he’s managed to carve out a niche as a fan favorite – no small feat in a series brimming with memorable characters.
Despite having a brief stint on the show so far, Dave Annable’s portrayal of Lee Dutton in “Yellowstone” has garnered him a notable fan-favorite status. With no significant changes foreseen for Season 5’s final episodes or future “Yellowstone” series, Annable’s character has made an impact. Interestingly, even though he only appeared on screen three times as Kayce and Beth’s deceased brother, Annable mentions that the color of his character’s hair was largely determined by the show’s original leading actor, Kevin Costner.
During the Fall TV season, Dave Annable is featured alongside the cast of “Special Ops: Lioness” Season 2, portraying Neal McNamara, the husband of Zoe Saldaña’s character Joe’s station chief. In this role, he gets to show off his naturally graying hair and beard without any hassle. However, it seems that on “Yellowstone,” his character Lee required him to deviate from his natural appearance, a fact he found out when he asked to play the role without any alterations.
Speaking to People about co-starring in both Taylor Sheridan dramas, the actor said:
In a different context, when I inquired, Yellowstone’s character, graciously portrayed by Mr. Kevin Costner, responded affirmatively. To my surprise, he suggested I should dye my hair as he preferred not to appear too old. I agreed and understood his reasoning.
Despite vividly recalling every scene featuring Lee Dutton and his chilling return being a highlight from Season 4 finale, I’m unfortunately unable to confirm with certainty the color of his hair. If it had been an uncommon color like bright purple, I would have noticed, but I can’t say for sure if it was just light brown.
Fortunately for Annable, the requirement concerning hair style wasn’t a factor when he was cast as Neal, sparing him the need to allocate time for dying his hair in his schedule. He went on to add:
So yeah, [for] this one I think it works. We’re able to use it. It looks doctor-y.
In a different phrasing, it could be said that requiring Josh Lucas, who portrayed the younger John Dutton in flashbacks on Yellowstone, to transform himself to closely resemble Kevin Costner might not be an unreasonable request. However, Lucas drew a boundary at altering his nose to match Costner’s distinctive feature, the broken nose.
If Lucas had gray hair, it’s not hard to see how that might be related to John’s older hair appearance. However, it’s a bit of a leap to assume that Lee Dutton showing gray in flashbacks or dreams on Yellowstone would make viewers instantly realize Kevin Costner is no longer young. Actors value their egos and self-confidence, so kudos to Annable for going along with it politely. Still, I wonder if any actor has ever hesitated at such a request from the director of Horizon.
Regrettably for dedicated John Dutton fans, Kevin Costner won’t return for the fifth and potentially last season of Yellowstone, which is set to premiere on Paramount Network on November 15th. A spin-off season featuring Cole Hauser and Kelly Reilly may still be in development. In the meantime, don’t forget to watch Season 2 of Special Ops: Lioness, available for streaming every Sunday night with a Paramount+ subscription.
