As a longtime fanatic of the God of War franchise, I must say this news has sent waves of both anticipation and uncertainty through my gaming-centric heart. The departure of Rafe Judkins, Hawk Ostby, and Mark Fergus from the series has left me with a mix of emotions. On one hand, I’m intrigued by the prospect of a new creative direction for the series; on the other, I can’t help but wonder if they’ll manage to capture the raw power and epic storytelling that made Kratos’ journey so captivating in the first place.

Enthusiasts eager for the forthcoming God of War TV show might find themselves waiting a bit longer due to significant alterations happening behind the scenes. These changes are causing the project to start afresh from the ground up. The announcement about a TV series was made in March 2022, but the production has encountered a major setback.

As reported by Deadline, the showrunner and executive producer Rafe Judkins, along with executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, submitted several scripts for the God of War series. Despite the fact that Sony Pictures TV and Amazon MGM Studios were allegedly pleased with the submitted scripts, they are planning to take the show in a fresh creative direction. As of now, no new showrunner has been appointed, and there are discussions about setting up a new writers’ room.

It’s quite surprising given Rafe Judkins’ current commitments – he’s the showrunner for Amazon Prime Video’s ‘Wheel of Time’ and has an overall deal with the platform. Additionally, he penned the script for ‘Uncharted’, a film adaptation of a PlayStation video game starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. Notably, Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus, creators and showrunners of another hit Prime Video series, ‘The Expanse’, are also on the list. They wrote ‘Children of Men’, which garnered an Academy Award nomination, and were part of the team that scripted the first ‘Iron Man’ movie.

The well-known video game series, God of War, started in 2005 and revolves around Kratos, a Spartan warrior who eventually ascends to the role of God of War after embarking on a mission to eliminate all gods from the Olympian pantheon. Subsequent games delved into Kratos’ family life and had him battling Norse deities. In an effort to broaden its media influence, Sony has been mulling over adaptations of hit video games from their PlayStation collection, with God of War being a prime candidate for such development.

PlayStation Adaptations Are Taking Over Movies and TV

Previously, efforts to transform God of War into a movie have faced numerous obstacles since the 2010s. However, in recent years, PlayStation has been aggressively pursuing game adaptations and has achieved significant success. The recent box office triumphs of Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021) and Uncharted (2022) have encouraged Sony to continue this trend. In 2023, Sony experienced double success with The Last of Us on HBO and Twisted Metal on Peacock. Given the recent momentum, it appears that God of War is a high priority for the studios and they are determined to get it right.

Enthusiasts of the “God of War” series may find solace this holiday season as Prime Video prepares to unfold a fresh Kratos tale through their anthology series, “Secret Level.” This series delves into distinctive video game universes, and the trailer suggests that Kratos could be part of the upcoming PlayStation-themed episode. Given that the “God of War” series is anticipated to release another installment at least two years from now, this spin-off may serve as a satisfying interlude until then, when we might finally get our hands on a new “God of War” game.
