As a die-hard fan of both Godzilla and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I can’t help but feel a thrill of excitement at the prospect of Takashi Yamazaki, the mastermind behind the stunningly beautiful and emotionally resonant “Godzilla Minus One“, stepping into the world of Marvel Studios. With his unique blend of heart-wrenching storytelling and breathtaking visual effects, Yamazaki has proven himself to be a formidable force in the realm of kaiju cinema.
It’s possible that the filmmaker behind “Godzilla Minus One“, Takashi Yamazaki, might soon contribute to the renowned Marvel Cinematic Universe. The unexpected win of “Godzilla Minus One” at the Oscars earlier this year was impressive given its relatively small budget compared to other blockbusters. Not only did it boast one of the most visually stunning Godzillas in recent memory, but it also told a deeply emotional story about a pilot who returned home after failing his duty during WWII and longed to prove himself when Godzilla attacked 1950s Japan. Although Yamazaki is currently working on another “Godzilla” film, there’s speculation that he might also join the ranks of the world’s largest cinematic franchise.
According to VirtualGorilla, Takashi Yamazaki disclosed at the Tokyo International Film Festival that he’s had discussions with Kevin Feige, the president of Marvel Studios. During a gathering commemorating the 70th anniversary of the legendary kaiju, Yamazaki reminisced about a chat he had with “Marvel’s president.” Feige apparently started by expressing his love for Godzilla. Yamazaki recollected, “Marvel’s president told me, ‘Wadatsumi!’ [the name of the operation to defeat Godzilla].
“We’re all having meetings every day to see if we can make it happen like that.”
After that, Yamazaki hinted that the encounter might not have been a mere coincidence. Given his comments, It seems Marvel Studios could be considering a means to incorporate the renowned kaiju director into the MCU in the future. According to him, “[Feige] mentioned every day we’re discussing if it can be done,” and he added, “I suspect it’s simply politeness.” Even though Yamazaki thinks Feige’s words were just being polite, fans eagerly await more of this beloved director’s work following Godzilla Minus One.
Which MCU Movie Could Takashi Yamazaki Direct?
It’s intriguing to imagine Takashi Yamazaki directing a Marvel movie, but it’s challenging to guess which monster (assuming he chooses that route) would shine on the silver screen without diving extensively into Marvel Comics’ extensive archive. Comics of the 20th century often borrowed ideas and themes from successful properties, and Marvel has its own spin on Godzilla. However, a direct reference might be too obvious for Yamazaki’s approach in the MCU.
Among the colossal monsters from Marvel’s past creations, Red Ronin seems like the top pick. This 105-foot tall robot was engineered by Stark Industries’ geniuses to combat Godzilla. Although it’s unlikely that the MCU will introduce Godzilla, a Red Ronin transformation into an antagonist for a solo MCU film would be thrilling, especially with renowned director Yamazaki leading the project. If Red Ronin were to become the villain, a hero would be required – unless this imaginary movie draws from Yamazaki’s expertise in one of his finest works, featuring a friendly giant robot: “The Iron Giant.” This concept might seem far-fetched, but Yamazaki transitioning from kaiju killer to sympathetic giants in the MCU could indeed make for an engaging film.
