Godzilla x Kong 3

In 2021, the movie titled “Godzilla vs. Kong” was first intended as the grand finale for Legendary’s reinterpretation of the classic Toho monster series in North America. However, this thrilling monster fight film turned out to be the highest-grossing film in the franchise thus far, a significant victory following the relatively underperforming box office earnings of “Godzilla: King of the Monsters” in 2019. This success paved the way for the 2024 sequel, “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire“, where Godzilla and King Kong are portrayed as allies rather than adversaries. The film’s earnings were substantial enough to greenlight a third installment, with production now officially underway, as confirmed by an actor involved in the project.

At the Sydney red carpet event for the upcoming second season of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” actor Kaitlyn Dever shared that the filming for the yet-to-be-titled “Godzilla vs Kong 3” has commenced. Dever mentioned she was currently shooting another movie in Queensland, and had come to Sydney only for press engagements before returning there. When asked if it was the “Godzilla” project she was talking about, Dever confirmed it indeed was. Although an official release date is yet to be announced, the commencement of filming could suggest a potential premiere as late as the end of 2026 or early 2027.

Kaitlyn Dever has kept herself occupied with the demanding production of the anticipated remake of The Last of Us Part II, slated for potential third and fourth seasons down the line. If this happens, the show might recommence filming later in 2022, although HBO hasn’t provided an official update yet. Meanwhile, Dever will be immersed in the Monsterverse, finding herself sandwiched between the colossal Titans Godzilla and Kong as they confront a devastating global threat that has been simply termed apocalyptic.

Godzilla x Kong 3‘ Will Feature an Impressive Cast of Human Characters

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I must confess that while the Godzilla x Kong series and the broader Monsterverse have made impressive strides at the box office, one persistent criticism has been the absence of captivating human characters. Instead of enriching the on-screen action with compelling character development, films like The New Empire and King of the Monsters tend to lose steam when the focus shifts from the colossal battles back to the human cast’s activities. However, there was a shining moment in the latest Godzilla x Kong film with Dan Stevens portraying Trapper, the monster veterinarian/dentist, whose detached acting style was a standout and I’m thrilled to learn he’ll be reprising his role for the upcoming threequel.

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share some exciting news about an upcoming monster movie! The talented Jack O’Connell, Delroy Lindo, and Matthew Modine are set to join Stevens and Dever in this film. However, it seems that Rebecca Hall and Brian Tyree Henry, who graced the screens in the previous two GxK films, might not be reprising their roles for the third installment. What makes this movie particularly intriguing is that it won’t be directed by Adam Wingard, who helmed the first two films. The new director brings a fresh perspective that I can hardly wait to see on the big screen!

Instead, David Callaham will pen the script for Godzilla x Kong 3, with Grant Sputore taking on the director’s role. Known primarily as a co-writer on movies like Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Callaham also contributed to the story of Gareth Edwards’ 2014 Godzilla film. With production seemingly already in progress, fans of the Monsterverse can anticipate bigger-than-life kaiju action coming up sooner rather than later.
