Golden Globe Nominations: Jon M. Chu, Paul Mescal, Meryl Streep Snubbed as Diego Luna, Jamie Foxx Surprise

As a seasoned gamer who’s seen more movie and TV releases than I can count, Monday’s Golden Globe nominations left me shaking my head in disbelief more times than I care to remember!

Several highly praised, potential award-winning movies were predicted to receive numerous nominations for the 2025 Golden Globes on Monday morning. However, they didn’t receive as many nominations as anticipated compared to their initial expectations.

Although these recent honors have been pouring in for projects like the Gotham Awards winner, Babygirl, A Different Man (which was crowned best feature just a week ago), as well as Nickel Boys, The Outrun, The Piano Lesson, Seed of the Sacred Fig, and Sing Sing from the Independent Spirit Awards, each of these productions only managed to secure a single nomination.

Moreover, noteworthy award contenders (anticipated to be nominated across several categories) – “Blitz, The Room Next Door, September 5” and “Saturday Night” – each received just a single nomination.

Moreover, although Marianne Jean-Baptiste’s performance in Hard Truths recently earned several critics awards and a British Independent Film Award, unfortunately, neither she nor the movie received a Golden Globe nomination this morning.

In a similar fashion, the big winner at the BIFAs, “Kneecap”, was not recognized with a nomination in the category for Best Film Not in the English Language.

On par with its release date partner “Wicked”, Gladiator II was anticipated to make a strong impact during the nominations announcement on Monday. However, while “Wicked” garnered four nominations, Gladiator II (sequel to the Oscar-winning film “Gladiator”) only received two nods – one for the Globes’ newly established cinematic and box office achievement category and another for supporting actor Denzel Washington. Despite predictions for a best drama film nomination, Gladiator II missed out on this recognition. Additionally, stars Paul Mescal and director Ridley Scott, who were widely expected to secure individual nominations in the acting and directing categories respectively, did not receive any personal nods.

Other significant omissions in the film awards include failing to recognize Jon M. Chu, director of Wicked, for a best director nomination, as well as excluding Denis Villeneuve from consideration for Dune: Part Two. Additionally, animated contenders Piece by Piece and That Christmas were not nominated in any category.

Despite Joker: Folie à Deux being a critical and commercial flop, there were still expectations that stars Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga would receive awards nominations for their performances in the sequel to the Oscar winner. However, Joker 2 was snubbed from this morning’s Golden Globe nominations.

Among the most unexpected recognitions from the Golden Globe nominations announced on Monday morning was a supporting actor nomination for Diego Luna in the Spanish-language Hulu miniseries “La Máquina”. This series, which premiered this fall and tells the story of an aging Mexican boxing legend (portrayed by Gael García Bernal), convinced to take one last fight, has received positive reviews (with a 90% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes). Interestingly, Luna’s performance wasn’t among the predicted Golden Globe nominees according to industry experts, and it hasn’t garnered as much attention as some other TV series contenders, such as Tyler James Williams from “Abbott Elementary” and Peter Sarsgaard from “Presumed Innocent”, who missed out on nominations in the supporting actor category.

Regarding “Presumed Innocent“, it’s worth noting that the Golden Globes were among the first major award bodies to take notice of this drama, which premiered in June and quickly became Apple TV+’s most-watched series less than a month after its debut. Remarkably, the show initially intended as a limited series was granted a second season. However, it was overlooked for a series nomination, along with one for Sarsgaard, and only secured a single nomination for lead actor Jake Gyllenhaal.

In much the same vein, Jason Segel and Harrison Ford received recognition for their performances in “Shrinking“, yet the show itself wasn’t nominated. Similarly, Emma D’arcy was recognized for her role in “House of the Dragon“, but the series didn’t receive a nomination (even though it won the Golden Globe for Best Drama Series in its first season). Lastly, Ted Danson was nominated for his role in “Man on the Inside“, but the series failed to secure a nod.

On the opposite side, several well-known artists were overlooked despite their series receiving numerous nominations. For instance, Nicholas Alexander Chavez from the show Monsters wasn’t recognized, even though his co-stars Cooper Koch and Javier Bardem, as well as the series itself, received nods. Similarly, Meryl Streep from Only Murders in the Building was not nominated despite the show receiving four nominations this season. Additionally, The Diplomat garnered three nominations, including for stars Keri Russell and Allison Janney, and recognition for the series itself. However, Rufus Sewell from the cast was left out of this year’s list of nominees.

This year, some critically acclaimed series that didn’t receive any nominations are “Bad Sisters”, starring Maya Rudolph in “Loot”, “Palm Royale” (Carol Burnett, the namesake of the Carol Burnett Award, also didn’t receive a nod), “A Very Royal Scandal”, and the final season of “Curb Your Enthusiasm”.

Among the unexpected TV accolades, Billy Bob Thornton received a nomination for best drama actor for his performance in “Landman”. Interestingly, despite Kevin Costner’s Golden Globes win three years ago and the announced final season of “Yellowstone”, there were no Emmy nods this year, although discussions about a possible sixth season are ongoing. Additionally, early nominations have been given for Jamie Foxx’s upcoming special and the second season of “Squid Game”.

The Golden Globe Awards are produced by Dick Clark Productions, which is co-owned by Penske Media Eldridge, a partnership between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge, the same company that owns The Hollywood Reporter.
