Golden Globes: ‘Anora’ Shut Out as ‘Conclave,’ ‘Wicked’ Win One Each; Fernanda Torres Surprises

Sunday night’s 2025 Golden Globes was yet another disappointing night for Oscar hopeful Anora.

Despite Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning film receiving five nominations, matching the count for “The Substance,” which earned its leading actress, Demi Moore, best actress in a musical or comedy, “Anora” ended up with no awards.

Though Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or winner was nominated for five awards alongside “The Substance,” which won best actress in a musical or comedy for Demi Moore, “Anora” didn’t take home any prizes on the night.

Sean Baker’s Palme d’Or-winning film was up against “The Substance” with five nominations each, but it was the latter that won best actress in a musical or comedy for Demi Moore. Unfortunately, “Anora” failed to win any awards.

Movies that received multiple Golden Globe nominations but were not awarded on Sunday night include “The Wild Robot,” which was predicted by some to win the best animated feature category; “A Complete Unknown,” starring Timothée Chalamet, who received recognition during host Nikki Glaser’s opening monologue; and “All We Imagine as Light,” “The Apprentice,” “Dune: Part Two,” “Gladiator II,” “Inside Out 2” and “The Last Showgirl,” all of which were nominated twice.

In the meantime, while other leading contenders managed to secure a single award each, some notable mentions include six-times nominated “Conclave” that bagged the award for Best Screenplay and four-times nominated “Challengers”, winning in the category of Best Score. These nominees started with the third and fourth most nominations after frontrunners (and winners) “Emilia Pérez” and “The Brutalist”.

However, it seems that no difference between box office earnings and Golden Globe wins might be wider than for the film Wicked, which has amassed over $650 million globally and garnered four nominations, yet only claimed one award – best cinematic and box-office achievement. During her monologue, Glaser expressed that everyone adored Wicked. However, it appears that Golden Globe voters may have had stronger feelings for other productions compared to their affection for this film.

Personally, I found myself somewhat disappointed as a fan when The Bear, the highly anticipated series from Disney’s FX, didn’t quite live up to its potential at the TV awards. Despite racking up an impressive five nominations, it only managed to snag one award – for Jeremy Allen White in the category of best actor in a comedy series. Unfortunately, White wasn’t even present to accept his accolade. Ayo Edibiri, who had won last year, couldn’t repeat her success this time around, as The Bear lost out to Hacks in the race for the top prize – best comedy series.

In an unexpected turn of events, Fernanda Torres from the movie “I’m Still Here” triumphed over a highly esteemed group of actresses, including Nicole Kidman from “Babygirl,” Angelina Jolie from “Maria,” and Kate Winslet who was also nominated for Lee’s film. This victory took place during the Globes awards ceremony on Sunday night, where she was nominated for two awards.

Contrary to expectations, Flow emerged victorious amidst strong competition from Inside Out 2 and The Wild Robot, claiming the top spot in the animated film genre.

In the television award categories, unexpectedly, Tadanobu Asano, who played in Shogun, emerged victorious over Javier Bardem from Monsters, Harrison Ford from Shrinking, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach from The Bear, as well as others.

The production company behind the Golden Globes, Dick Clark Productions, is a part of a shared business venture named Penske Media Eldridge. This partnership, which also includes The Hollywood Reporter in its ownership, is made up of both Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge.
