Golden Globes: Brady Corbet Honors Jeff Baena While Accepting Best Director Award

In his acceptance speech for Best Director at the 2025 Golden Globes on Sunday, Brady Corbet paused to pay tribute to indie film director-writer Jeff Baena, who tragically took his own life at the age of 47 on Friday.

“My heart is with Aubrey Plaza and Jeff’s family,” Corbet said at the end of his speech.

This year, Michael Keaton handed the award to Corbet, who secured both his initial nomination and victory with the movie that took them seven long years to create.

Corbet expressed heartfelt gratitude towards the Golden Globes for boosting our movie’s profile with their recognition. He acknowledged that such accolades are particularly significant for a film like ours which, just a few short months ago, faced considerable obstacles. Moreover, he felt honored to be among esteemed filmmakers whom he deeply respects. Notably, many dedicated individuals poured countless hours into this project before, during, and after its completion.

Additionally, he paid tribute to three significant figures in this creation’s process – his grandfather, his grandfather’s sibling, and his producing partner, Kevin Turen. “My presence here tonight would not have been possible without their impact on me.

Corbet found himself among five other filmmakers, including Jacques Audiard (Emilia Pérez), Sean Baker (Anora), Edward Berger (Conclave), Coralie Fargeat (The Substance) and Payal Kapadia (All We Imagine as Light), who were all nominated for recognition.

To date in the Golden Globes’ history, just three women have taken home the Best Director award: Barbra Streisand, Chloé Zhao, and Jane Campion. However, several other talented women, such as Kathryn Bigelow, Ava DuVernay, Regina King, Emerald Fennell, Greta Gerwig, and Celine Song, have been recognized with nominations in this category.
