Golden Globes: Hiroyuki Sanada Follows Emmy Win with Best TV Drama Actor Award for ‘Shogun’

2025 saw Hiroyuki Sanada triumphantly winning the Best Lead Actor award in a Drama Series at the Golden Globes, repeating his historic achievement in the same category from the previous year’s Emmys, for his outstanding portrayal in Shogun.

I’m overjoyed to receive recognition from the Golden Globes! It’s a privilege to stand among these outstanding nominees. I extend my gratitude to FX, Disney+, and the entire cast and crew of ‘Shogun’ for embarking on this incredible voyage with me. To everyone who has been part of my life journey, thank you from the bottom of my heart – you’ve all played a role in bringing me to this moment. And to the aspiring actors and creators worldwide: Embrace your individuality, trust yourself, and never lose hope. Good luck on your paths!

In September 2024, he bagged the Golden Globe trophy for his portrayal of Yoshii Toranaga in the FX series “Shogun”. This victory highlights a significant milestone for Sanada, who is one of the rare Japanese actors to make a substantial impact in Hollywood.

Sanada and the creative team behind Shogun, including co-creators, executive producers, and writers Justin Marks and Rachel Kondo, are already set for another two seasons of the FX series. The network has spent several years crafting this series, which is adapted from James Clavell’s 1975 novel with the same title.

In 2025, the Golden Globe Awards were held on January 5th at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. This was the second attempt to adapt “Shōgun,” following NBC’s Richard Chamberlain miniseries from 1980.

The production company responsible for the Golden Globes, Dick Clark Productions, is co-owned by Penske Media Eldridge – a partnership between Penske Media Corporation and Eldridge, who also own The Hollywood Reporter.
