As a long-time enthusiast of the Golden Globes, I can’t help but feel a sense of nostalgia and excitement as Barry Adelman navigates the Beverly Hilton halls once again. With his extensive experience under his belt, he knows better than most what makes this event shine.
Barry Adelman, an experienced insider of the Golden Globes, who has been executive producing the glamorous broadcast for years at Dick Clark Productions, was seen early in the morning making his way through a press line inside the Beverly Hilton just moments after the nominees were announced for the 82nd annual telecast, even before sunrise on Monday.
Adelman took a short break for an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to reveal his expectations for the upcoming show, discuss Nikki Glaser’s bold humor, and offer some insight into the decision to organize a new gala just two days before the Golden Globes. He explained that due to time constraints during the main event, they couldn’t give a full tribute to their honorees. To rectify this, they planned a separate ceremony on January 3 at the Beverly Hilton, where the Golden Globes are held. This will be the first time such an event is dedicated solely to the presentation of the Cecil B. DeMille Award (to be given to Viola Davis) and the Carol Burnett Award (to be given to Ted Danson). Adelman believes this arrangement will provide them with a special evening, allow them to attend the main show, and receive recognition from their peers. He thinks it’s going to be fantastic.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be witnessing history as the upcoming Golden Globes will air for the second year in a row on CBS, following a five-year deal they signed with the Globes. This event also marks the second Golden Globes since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) was replaced after being acquired by Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge. Now, it’s under the ownership of Dick Clark Productions, who are responsible for producing this prestigious award show, the Golden Globe Awards.
How are you feeling about this year’s roster of nominees?
I’m doing fabulously! The air of anticipation is palpable both here and across virtual platforms. There’s a lot of enthusiasm surrounding these nominations, and it promises to be an exceptional event.
How do you expect the broadcast to change now that it’s in its second year on CBS?
This newly built residence boasts a rich history, as CBS is an exceptional television network known for its long-standing traditions. This year, they’re being represented by the talented Kathy Bates. They offer ample room for creative exploration, and I’m confident that the upcoming show will be outstanding.
You have a host this year in Nikki Glaser who is also nominated …
Which is very exciting.
This year, she was confirmed as the host earlier compared to Jo Koy from last year, since he hadn’t joined by the time nominations were revealed. What difference might this early confirmation make for the upcoming show?
Nikki is a comedian who adapts her jokes on the spot and carefully plans her performances, as she has the knack for being both quick-witted and insightful. Her ability to think deeply allows her extra preparation to significantly enhance her acts.
Previously, she expressed to The Hollywood Reporter that she’s eagerly awaiting this opportunity. It seems like I’m catching her at the perfect moment.
People often draw parallels to Ricky Gervais’ comedic style, and indeed, similarities exist. Occasionally, she may push boundaries and surprise you with something unexpected or unforeseen. I believe the global audience is eagerly awaiting her next act.
Given that politics may not be her usual focus, one might wonder how it will factor into the upcoming broadcast, considering that the inauguration is just around the corner and it happens shortly after the Golden Globes ceremony. What role do you anticipate politics will have in this event?
I’m not sure myself. However, it seems like that decision is up to Nikki. Therefore, it would be intriguing to see what the discussion will be around once it’s revealed.
What about other new elements can viewers expect?
For just two years running, we’ve managed to secure both the box office award and the stand-up comedian award once more. By continuing these honors and establishing them as a tradition, our show remains fresh and exciting. We’re bursting with secrets that we can’t reveal just yet, and there are numerous categories brimming with talented nominees. The evening promises to be one you won’t want to miss.
We’re looking forward to a memorable occasion where Viola Davis and Ted Danson, two remarkable figures, will be given their due recognition. Before the main event, they’ll be celebrated in a unique ceremony, where they’ll receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award (for Viola) and the Carol Burnett Award (for Ted). During the show itself, they’ll have a special moment that will be met with applause and admiration. It promises to be a delightful sight when they walk onto the stage.
“Could you explain to me the details of the upcoming event? I’m eager to know who will be recognized there, and if by chance, we get to see a snippet of that moment?”
We’re still working out the specifics, but rest assured, they will receive recognition during the event.
It won’t be the traditional tribute and then a speech?
At the gala, that event has likely taken place already. Yet, they are set to receive recognition at the Golden Globes, surrounded by their contemporaries. Truly, they have earned it.
What was the strategy behind that decision? To free up more time in the broadcast?
Instead of combining the Governors Awards with the Oscars as we’ve done with other shows, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences chooses to hold them separately. This allows us to give honorees a more leisurely and comprehensive celebration, which they truly deserve. By dedicating an entire evening to these individuals, we can pay them a proper tribute without being constrained by time limits during the show. This way, they can enjoy their special night, attend the awards ceremony, and receive well-deserved recognition from their peers. We believe this change will result in a wonderful event.
As a gamer speaking casually, I’d say something like: “Hey there! Did you know that the events I love, like the New Year’s Rockin’ Eve, are hosted by none other than Dick Clark Productions? Guess who’s behind the scenes? It’s actually owned by The Hollywood Reporter’s parent company, Penske Media Corporation. They teamed up with Eldridge in a partnership to run it as a subsidiary.
