Good Omens Season 3: What We Know About The Final Season

As a long-time fan of Neil Gaiman’s work, I find myself both intrigued and saddened by the recent developments surrounding Good Omens Season 3. Having followed the series since its inception, I must admit that I was thrilled when it was renewed for another season, eagerly anticipating the conclusion to this delightful tale of angels and demons.

In 2019, the series “Good Omens” made its debut on Amazon Prime Video as a relatively accurate portrayal of Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s novel with the same title, and it soon became one of Prime Video’s top shows. After a second season in 2023, the show is set to air another round of episodes for its final season. As we approach the fall TV schedule for 2024 and look forward to the 2025 TV schedule, fans eagerly await the arrival of “Good Omens” Season 3 to conclude the divine comedy/drama. Here’s what we know so far about the series finale.

What Is Good Omens Season 3’s Premiere Date?

Currently, there’s no confirmed release date for Season 3 on Amazon Prime as of this writing. The gap between Seasons 1 and 2 of Good Omens was approximately four years, but it doesn’t guarantee that Season 3 will premiere in 2027. Although Season 2 debuted prior to the writers’ and actors’ strikes in 2023, the broader entertainment industry faced significant delays during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.

If there are no significant setbacks, it seems that the third season might return sooner than before, given that production on Good Omens was recently greenlit by Amazon Prime Video in December.

What Good Omens Season 3 Will Be About

In the final episode, Crowley and Aziraphale’s storyline in Season 2 reached an emotional climax. Faced with the decision, Aziraphale elected to take Gabriel’s position in Heaven, aiming to transform it according to his desires – a transformation that included elevating Crowley back to angelic status so they could work together again. However, Crowley swiftly declined and opted to remain on Earth as a demon. In a poignant farewell moment, Aziraphale tried one last grand gesture by kissing Crowley, but ultimately, the two parted ways. As per Metatron, Aziraphale already has a significant assignment in Heaven: overseeing the Second Coming.

It appears that the portrayal of the Second Coming in “Good Omens” deviates somewhat from the biblical account, as no clear hints were given about its true nature. However, it’s noteworthy that Jesus Christ made an appearance during Season 1, as both Crowley and Aziraphale attended his crucifixion.

Neil Gaiman provided greater insight than Metatron did regarding what lies ahead, as he disclosed during the Season 3 renewal that characters Crowley and Aziraphale will again confront the end of the world. As stated by the novel’s co-author and co-showrunner for Prime Video, only the combined efforts of these two characters can potentially rectify the situation. However, they are currently not sharing their plans on how to do so.

David Tennant And Michael Sheen Will Lead The Cast Returning For Season 3

Information regarding the cast for Good Omens Season 3 is scant, but it has been confirmed that David Tennant and Michael Sheen will be reprising their roles as Crowley and Aziraphale respectively. In fact, Sheen shared a picture of socks in Aziraphale’s distinctive tartan pattern on social media this past summer, much to the excitement of fans.

Based on how Season 2 concluded with Heaven up above and the bookshop below, it appears quite probable that Derek Jacobi will reprise his role as Metatron and Quelin Sepulveda will return as Muriel in future seasons. The manner in which Gabriel and Beelzebub were wrapped up in the Season 2 finale might suggest that Jon Hamm and Shelley Conn may not be included moving forward.

In the initial two seasons, Nina Sosanya and Maggie Service portrayed distinct characters on separate occasions. As for their potential reappearance in Season 3, it’s yet to be determined, alongside other cast members.

Production On Season 3 Was Delayed In September 2024

During the summer, work on the third season had been underway, however, it came to a stop in early September. At that time, Deadline speculated that there might have been talks regarding potential adjustments to the production, but no formal representative provided any confirmation about the matter.

Reports emerged that the project for ‘Good Omens’ had been temporarily halted, amidst increasing controversy concerning Neil Gaiman due to sexual assault accusations. However, Gaiman has refuted these allegations, and it appears that several factors contributed to the decision to suspend work on the production.

The team behind the scenes had already gone through a major change for Season 3, as executive producer and co-showrunner Douglas Mackinnon confirmed on Instagram that he has “moved on front Good Omens” and had “no information regarding the status of [Season] 3.”

Neil Gaiman Offered To Step Down Over Misconduct Accusations

Following the announcement that production for Season 3 had stopped, Deadline shares that Neil Gaiman has proposed to relinquish his role on Good Omens. This move could mark a substantial change, given that he authored the original novel with the late Terry Pratchett, penned or co-wrote each episode in the first two seasons, and held positions as executive producer and co-showrunner.

As stated by the source, Gaiman proposed stepping aside from Amazon and other series producers, aiming to keep production moving instead of being halted. It’s important to note that this offer does not imply any acceptance or acknowledgment of the accusations of sexual misconduct.

Although it was rumored that Amazon might take up the offer back in early September, no such decision has been made public as of now. As for the production of this series, it remains in its initial stages before cameras roll. Initially, filming was scheduled to start in Scotland come January 2025.

What Neil Gaiman Previously Said About Good Omens Season 3

In December 2023, it was announced that the series Good Omens would be renewed for Season 3. To express his feelings about this, author Neil Gaiman released a statement sharing his thoughts on the matter.

At long last, I’m thrilled to have completed the tale that Terry Pratchett and I conceived back in 1989 and refined in 2006. Terry had always been adamant that if we brought Good Omens to TV, we could see the story through to its full conclusion. Season One was a whirlwind of averting Armageddon, perilous prophecies, and impending doom. Season Two was a tender, softer chapter, though it may not have ended quite as blissfully as our beloved Angel and Demon might have wished. In Season Three, we’ll revisit the apocalypse once more. The Armageddon plans are going awry. Only Crowley and Aziraphale, working in tandem, can possibly set things right. And, it seems, they aren’t exactly on speaking terms.

The announcement for the series renewal further disclosed that the third season, being the last, will recreate a long-overdue dialogue between Neil Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett. A conversation they had approximately 35 years ago regarding the future of Crowley and Aziraphale, as envisioned by Gaiman himself. Earlier, he mentioned that the main challenge in adapting the ‘Good Omens’ book was dealing with Terry Pratchett’s absence from our world.

Thankfully, locating the first two seasons of Good Omens for viewing is quite simple. You can stream both seasons, each consisting of six episodes, using an Amazon Prime Video subscription. With any luck, the gap between Season 3 and now will be similar to the four years between Seasons 1 and 2. This should provide ample opportunity to revisit the ups and downs in Crowley and Aziraphale’s storyline thus far.
