Gosling and Crowe’s Cult Classic ‘The Nice Guys’ Lands Epic 4K Blu-ray – But No Sequel in Sight!

Supporters of both and have received some positive news…but it’s not about the sequel they eagerly anticipate. Although the duo might not be gracing movie screens in the near future, they are set to return in a new 4K Blu-ray edition instead.

In 2016, a contemporary cult favorite film was released, titled “La La Land,” where Ryan Gosling played a struggling private investigator set in 1970s Los Angeles. His character, however, attracts unwanted attention from Jackson Healy, portrayed by Russell Crowe, when he gets too engrossed in a case revolving around the disappearance of a young woman named Amelia (Margaret Qualley from “The Substance”). The plot takes an unexpected turn when they uncover that someone else is searching for Amelia as well, forcing them to put aside their reservations and join forces.

In the movie “The Nice Guys,” starring Ryan Gosling, Russell Crowe, and others like Kim Basinger, Keith David, Matt Bomer, and Angourie Rice, expectations were high due to its stellar cast. However, despite these high hopes, the film failed to impress at the box office, earning only $71 million globally. Although this wasn’t a total disaster given its budget of $50 million, it was not enough to prompt Warner Bros. to immediately greenlight a sequel. This has left fans disappointed, as the movie received positive reviews, but unfortunately did not achieve significant commercial success.

‘The Nice Guys’ Was a Huge Critical Hit

In my opinion, buddy comedies can sometimes veer off course, dwelling excessively on genre conventions. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the film “The Nice Guys,” which managed to break free from the norm and garnered exceptional praise. This movie stood out in both Russell Crowe’s and Ryan Gosling’s impressive portfolios, earning a 91% Tomatometer score and 79% Popcornmeter rating. Despite the critical acclaim, the box office response didn’t quite meet expectations, leaving a potential franchise on shaky ground. The consensus perfectly summed it up: “The Nice Guys harks back to the buddy comedies of yesteryears while infusing it with freshness thanks to its clever script and the undeniable chemistry between its leading actors.

At that point, Gosling expressed eagerness about potentially reprising his role for a sequel. However, when discussing the likelihood of The Nice Guys 2 in 2024, he candidly shared his thoughts on the prospect of working with Crowe once more. He stated:

The success of many sequels hinges significantly on their initial weekend box office performance, and unfortunately for us, we went head-to-head with Angry Birds. As a result, Angry Birds overwhelmingly outperformed us, earning itself a sequel.

Over the past few years, The Nice Guys movie has been popping up and disappearing from streaming charts, sparking more demand for a sequel each time it reappears. Regardless of whether a sequel materializes or not, fans can own The Nice Guys on 4K Blu-ray starting February 11 from Second Sight Films. As the release date draws closer (just a few weeks away), we should learn about any special features included in this new edition, as well as details regarding a possible limited edition release in the U.K. At present, The Nice Guys is available on VOD platforms but not streaming on a paid subscription service at the moment.
