Actor Govinda has often spoken about receiving an invitation to join the popular Avatar film series directed by James Cameron. In a recent conversation, he disclosed that he was presented with a sizable fee of approximately 180 million Indian rupees ($23.5 million USD) to star in this science fiction movie that premiered in 2009. Additionally, he boasted that it was his idea to name the film “Avatar” as proposed to Cameron.
During a chat with Mukesh Khanna on his YouTube channel, Govinda disclosed that he declined an offer worth approximately 215 million Indian rupees, a decision that left him feeling quite sorrowful. He reminisced about encountering a man in America, whom he had previously suggested a lucrative business venture.
At a later point, it was the same person who facilitated an introduction between him and director James Cameron, urging them to work together on a project. Govinda also mentioned that he had extended an invitation to Cameron and his crew for dinner to delve deeper into the details of this potential collaboration.
Govinda stated that it was him who proposed the title “Avatar” for the movie. Additionally, he noted that the main character in the story was depicted as disabled, causing him to turn down the opportunity to play the part.
As Govinda mentions, the director proposed a payment of 18 crore INR for the project and shared that the filming would span over 410 days. Initially, he was agreeable to this timeline, but later voiced worries about the extensive use of body paint for his character, fearing potential health problems and possible hospitalization due to its intensity.
Govinda emphasized the importance of an actor maintaining good physical health, as their body essentially functions as their main tool in their work. He noted that although some roles might appear enticing from a professional perspective, it’s crucial to take into account how they could potentially affect one’s overall wellness.
He also pointed out that declining a movie role might result in extended expressions of regret, since people within the industry, who are often closely connected and possess strong self-esteem, may feel personally invested.
In 2009, when James Cameron’s movie Avatar premiered, it set new records at the worldwide box office. A follow-up film, titled Avatar: The Way of Water, was released in 2022.
This year, Govinda will return to the silver screen and, during an interview on The Great Indian Kapil Show, he shared that three of his movies are scheduled for release in theaters in 2025.
